The annual dragon boat race in Duisburg, Germany, became more of a festival than a race when some 3,000 participants gathered on the river to compete and celebrate the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. This boat race has been held annually in Duisburg since 2000. As a tradition, dragon boats are beautifully decorated, and rowers are colorfully dressed. This year, 140 dragon boat teams joined the competition. Ger Hansen is the head of a team representing a German insurance company. He said that he enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the race and had been competing in it for over 20 years. Carsten Hahn, who once lived in China for a decade, said, It is really a pleasure to be involved in a Chinese cultural event like this in Germany. On the banks of the river, local Chinese communities, businesses, and language schools offered zongzi and other festival-related cultural items to visitors, helping people learn more about the festival.

It has been called a miracle. Four children in Colombia were found alive after spending 40 days alone in the Amazon jungle. After surviving a plane crash that killed their mother and two others, the children, aged 13, 9, and 4 years, and 11 months, were led by the eldest child and managed to find food, water, and shelter in the dangerous jungle. They learned these important survival skills from their parents and grandparents from a very early age. The rescue teams, with the help of aircraft and satellite images, tirelessly searched for the children, determined not to give up until they were found. The children were eventually found about five kilometers away from the crash site. Although weak and thin, they didnt have serious injuries. Their extraordinary survival clearly shows their deep connection with the jungle and their strong determination to stay alive.

Once, there was a famous research scientist. During an interview with a newspaper reporter, he was asked why he was so much more creative than the average person. He said that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was about six years old.

One day, he was trying to remove a big bottle of milk from the refrigerator, but he lost his hold on the bottle, and it fell, spilling milk all over the kitchen floor. When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him, giving him a lecture, or punishing him, she said, “What a wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already been done. You know, whenever you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up and bring everything to its proper order. So, together they cleaned up the spilled milk. His mother then said, What we have here is a failed experiment on how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Lets go out to the backyard and fill the bottle with water, and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it. The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!

This famous scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew there is no need to be afraid of making mistakes. Rather, mistakes are opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about.

There are many factors that can affect a persons sleep. Stress from studies or work is often the number one cause of short-term sleep problems. Usually, these sleep problems disappear once the stressful situations no longer exist. However, if not managed properly, they can last long and thus harm your health.

Unhealthy habits may lead to sleep problems, too. Drinking coffee or tea in the afternoon or evening, exercising before bedtime, and engaging in mentally intense activities right before going to bed can interfere with sleep.

Traveling also affects sleep, especially traveling across several time zones. It can disturb your biological rhythm and cause sleep disorders.

Environmental factors, such as a room thats too hot or cold, too noisy or bright, can interfere with sleep as well. Other factors to consider include the comfort and size of your bed, as well as your sleep partners habits. If you share a bed with someone who has different sleep habits, breathes noisily, or suffers from sleep difficulties, its very likely that youll have sleep problems, too!

Having an irregular lifestyle can also affect sleep. Some jobs require people to work at night. And with cell phones and the Internet, people can communicate at any time. All these make it difficult to maintain a regular sleep pattern.
