Because words have different meanings for all of us, we must be aware that our messages might be misunderstood. Aggressive behavior is often a knee-jerk reaction to potential conflict. Our hearts pump faster, our blood flow increases, and stress hormones flow from our adrenal glands. This was an appropriate response for cavemen attacked by wild animals. The down side to aggressive behavior is that it often makes the conflict worse and weakens our important relationships. That’s why many of us will avoid conflict at any cost. Passive behavior involves the avoidance of conflict. We can be passive by either physically walking away or mentally refusing to confront the issue. Can you understand how passive behavior can result in a lose/win relationship, meaning you lose and the other person wins? When she acts like a martyr, do you think her family respects her? Jan may think she is doing her family a favor, but no one is learning responsibility. If you have a tendency to react passively to most situations, others may attempt to manipulate you.
