Chapter Text 正文
Wooyoung went through his shift the next morning on autopilot, taking orders and making drinks while his mind was elsewhere. Specifically, his mind was still out there in the rain with San, recalling the feeling of his lips and the thump of his heart. Even when he went on his break and talked with Hongjoong, he was barely present, too locked up inside of his own mind to think about much else.
At one point he even spilled coffee on himself, which was
very
embarrassing, because Wooyoung rarely made such mistakes. San was running circles through his mind, and he needed to get him out of there. Otherwise, he might just walk into incoming traffic without even realizing it, too busy imagining what it would be like to kiss him again.
The hours dragged by, and Wooyoung kept checking his phone for texts from San, but he didn’t receive anything. Not until right before their appointment with Seonghwa, when San let him know that he was on his way. Wooyoung waited outside like he always did, and when the familiar car approached, he went right for the passenger door with a small gift in his hands. A gift, or a peace offering, depending on how their interaction would go.
He sat down, looking over at San, who gave him a tentative smile. He looked especially handsome today, with his hair swept out of his eyes, clad in a plain white tshirt. Nothing special, but the sleeves clung to the muscles of his arms, and Wooyoung found it very difficult to keep his eyes on San’s face instead of his sculpted torso. He always seemed to be having that problem, when it came to San.
“I brought you this,” Wooyoung said, and he held out the cup of coffee in his hands, the first time he was actually satisfying the terms of their agreement. San took it from his hands with a nod, murmuring a soft thanks as he took a sip from the cup. “Isn’t it better than the coffee at that other godforsaken place?”
San seemed to ponder this for a moment, taking another sip and pursing his lips as he considered the taste. He swallowed, his throat moving, and heat spread over Wooyoung’s skin. “Yeah, I have to give it to you. This is damn good coffee - I suppose your loyalties make sense now.” He grinned, and Wooyoung returned it, and neither of them knew what to say after that.
They looked at each other for a few seconds, nothing but silence filling the car, pressing on the windows and straining the glass. Wooyoung’s tongue felt too big for his mouth, and he struggled to form the words he wanted to say, eventually settling for the obvious choice. “I’m sorry!” he blurted, but San opened his mouth at the same time, both of them saying the same two words in unison.
Wooyoung blushed, and he noticed the pink flush that tinted San’s cheeks as well, some of the uncertainty leaching from the air around them. “I’m sorry I ran off like that. I couldn’t let Hongjoong see me, and he was seriously right there, and it would have taken me too long to actually get in your car. But I didn’t mean to scare you-”
“It’s okay, Wooyoung,” San interrupted, and his voice was warm, falling over Wooyoung’s shoulders like a blanket. “I understand why you did it - I didn’t even see him, so it was a good thing that you did. That would have blown our operation really fast, and I enjoy doing this with you. A lot. I would have been sad to see it end so soon.” His eyes were earnest as he spoke, and this was so different from their usual banter that Wooyoung’s mouth dried up as he shifted in his seat.
“I don’t want it to end either,” he agreed, his voice smaller than he had intended. He smiled, and San smiled back, and maybe their relationship was still okay after all. Even though it was still decidedly fake, and they hadn’t addressed the actual kiss, but Wooyoung wasn’t quite sure how to bring that up. He was just happy to be here with San still, and he supposed that if they really did have feelings for each other that transcended the boundaries of their fake relationship, then it would all come out with time.
He swallowed thickly, glancing at the dashboard, and the words he planned to say next died on his tongue as his eyes flew open. “Oh, we’re gonna be late!” he exclaimed, pointing at the time. It didn’t feel like any time had passed, but their appointment was in five minutes, and San let out a curse as he shifted his car into drive and pulled back onto the road. He didn’t even bother to play around with the radio, too determined to make it to the session on time.
Wooyoung rested his hand on the center console, because he had trouble keeping his limbs to himself while confined in small seats like this. He always splayed his arms and legs out to fill the space, and he didn’t even notice that he had done it until San reached over and placed his hand right over Wooyoung’s, lacing their fingers together. Wooyoung almost choked on his next inhale, and he sat up straight in his seat, his skin burning along the area of contact.
He snuck a glance at San, but he was merely watching the road, one hand on the wheel and a soft smile curving his lips. Wooyoung took a deep breath, hoping that it was subtle enough for San not to notice, and he sank back into his seat. This was a nice feeling, to hold hands with San while he drove, but he didn’t understand the motive. Was San simply getting into character, or was he trying to imply something after the events of the night before?
The counseling center came into view, and Wooyoung didn’t have much time to ponder any of this before San had to retract his hand in order to shift the car into park. They glanced at each other, and Wooyoung was the first to look away, his cheeks burning. He opened the door, and San did the same, and they headed for the entrance in silence this time. Too many words remained unspoken between the two of them, and that made it difficult to keep up their usual banter.
They checked in with the receptionist, and they walked down the now familiar hallway to Seonghwa’s office. San rapped his knuckles against the door, and then they opened it to find the therapist sitting behind his desk, just like always. He looked so professional here that it was hard to reconcile this image of him with the one from the night before.
Seonghwa looked up at them when the door opened, a soft smile gracing his lips. “Hello San, Wooyoung. Come take a seat, alright? It’s a pleasure to meet with you both today.” Wooyoung sank down into his usual chair, and San did the same. The two of them cast a momentary glance at one another, eyes alight with mischief after the stakeout, and Wooyoung didn’t feel quite as strange after that.

They exchanged pleasantries, and Seonghwa flipped open his notebook until he reached a blank page, setting it down on the sleek mahogany surface of his desk. “So, I will begin this session how I always do, if that is alright with the two of you?” He was always doing that, asking questions to make sure that San and Wooyoung were comfortable with the proceedings, and they both nodded. “Would either of you care to begin?”
After a moment’s hesitation, Wooyoung raised his hand, though not in the obnoxious way that he had the last time. He had a feeling that Seonghwa could sense the shift between the two of them, for his expression was thoughtful as he glanced between them before giving Wooyoung a nod. “Go ahead, Wooyoung. Remember to have an open mind, and to try your best not to jump to criticism straight away, okay?”
“I will,” Wooyoung agreed, though he had never done a great job of that in the past and they both knew it. Seonghwa looked like he wanted to smile, but he managed to keep his face neutral, his eyes thoughtful and quite pretty.
Pausing to take a deep breath, Wooyoung considered what he wanted to say. It would be easy to resort to their regular bickering, to make up some ridiculous story and frame San as a terrible person just to watch him try to scramble his way out of it, but his heart wasn’t in it today. He loved fooling around with San, but right now he was so confused about the current state of their relationship that it didn’t feel right to slip back into that easy flow of nonsense. Seonghwa was a professional couples therapist, after all, and maybe he could provide some good insight even without the full context.

“I don’t know how to feel about San today, to be honest with you,” he began, and something in his voice must have betrayed his intent, for he felt San’s eyes watching him, nearly burning through the surface of his skin. “I guess I’m confused, that’s the best way for me to describe it. One moment he’ll say that our relationship is destined for nothing but an end, and the next moment he’ll reach over to hold my hand. He makes me wonder sometimes if this is all for nothing, if his feelings aren’t even real, but then he kisses me in the rain and treats me better than any other person I’ve ever dated, and I don’t even know
what
to think anymore. He is sending me a lot of mixed signals, but he hasn’t explained any of them for what they truly mean, and all I can do is wonder if he actually likes me at all, or if he’s just keeping me around because it’s easy.” Wooyoung tried his best to adjust their current situation so that Seonghwa wouldn’t be suspicious, and he must have done a well enough job, for the therapist was watching him with sympathetic eyes.
Seonghwa actually seemed somewhat surprised, because he had probably been bracing himself for whatever argument he would have to mediate today, but that wasn’t the case this time. “That was very insightful, Wooyoung, thank you,” he murmured, jotting something down in his notebook with a quick hand. “A very mature outlook - I’m proud of you for wondering about how San feels, instead of jumping to conclusions. Might I remind you, though, that the two of you are in a relationship - if San didn’t like you, he wouldn’t be here with you. Both of you are taking the necessary steps to repair your relationship, and I hope that can assuage some of your worries.”
He clearly meant well, but the words didn’t comfort Wooyoung in the slightest - not even close. Because they weren’t
really
in a relationship, and they never had been. The lines had blurred to the point where Wooyoung had no idea what was fake and what was real, and nerves swirled within his chest as Seonghwa turned to San next.
“What about you, San?” he asked, his expression hopeful now that perhaps today would provide some kind of breakthrough.
If only he knew,
Wooyoung thought, and he pressed his lips together to keep a dry chuckle at bay.
San was still looking at Wooyoung, and their eyes met for a brief moment before San cleared his throat and addressed Seonghwa. “I didn’t intend to confuse Wooyoung, so I do feel bad about that, because I didn’t realize my actions weren’t coming across the correct way at times. But to answer your question about how I feel today… I feel more content in this relationship than I have in a long time,” he admitted, embellishing the situation to fit their created narrative, but Wooyoung could still detect the truth behind his words.
“I think that I didn’t really know what to expect when we began these sessions,” he continued. “I didn’t expect anything to really come out of it, and I know that we do a lot of arguing while we’re here, but having an hour set aside each week for the two of us to focus on nothing but each other has been really… eye opening for me, I suppose. I actually look forward to this time every week, and I’ve realized along the way that I think it’s because I just enjoy spending time with Wooyoung. Even when we’re arguing, I like the fire in his eyes, because he’s passionate enough about our relationship to get worked up like that. So I guess it seems like I’m sending mixed signals, but it’s really just because I’m still navigating my own feelings, now that I can view them with more clarity.”
He articulated himself so well that Wooyoung couldn’t help but hang on his every word, and by the time he was finished, Wooyoung’s face was burning. Some of that had surely been for show, but a lot of it was the truth - he could tell from the serious tone of San’s voice, so unlike the usual way they spoke to each other while in this office.
Seonghwa tried to veil his surprise, but Wooyoung still caught hints of it, his lips parted and brows slightly raised. “Thank you for being honest, San,” he said, looking between the two of them with eyes glimmering. He appeared to be quite pleased with this turn of events, and Wooyoung understood now why someone would want to become a couples therapist. To help two people come to understand each other… it must have been rewarding to reach this point.
A hint of guilt nagged at the back of Wooyoung’s mind, because none of this was real, after all. But Seonghwa didn’t know that, and he looked so proud of them both that Wooyoung wanted to slide down through the floor. “You have both gained a lot of respect for each other, I can see that. So I would like to address the issue that brought the two of you here in the first place - the topic of moving in together. Perhaps we can speak about this in a more civil manner, to bring the two of you some clarity regarding that as well.”
Of course the issue of moving in together wasn’t actually prevalent at all, but Wooyoung just went along with it anyway, taking the opportunity to speak before San could even open his mouth. “I think that issue has been blown way out of proportion by both of us, just for the sake of arguing, because we didn’t want to discuss the things that are
actually
bothering us. I don’t know if San does things for show, or if he really means them. I don’t know if I’m the only one lying awake at night, thinking about him. I don’t know if he kissed me last night because he wanted to, or because he felt like he had to! So really, the issue of him not wanting to move in with me is not the problem at all, because…” He trailed off when San snapped his head to the side to look at him, his eyes wide and panicked.
Wooyoung didn’t even register what he had said wrong, until Seonghwa pushed his chair away from his desk, the legs scraping along the floor. The sound drew both of their attention, and they looked away from each other to look at the therapist instead. His eyes had narrowed, a furrow developing between his brows. “Wooyoung,
you
are the one who didn’t want to move in with San,” he recalled, and Wooyoung understood his mistake then.
He had been so worked up that his tongue had slipped, forgetting an important detail of their fake relationship, and his mouth ran dry now as he tried to think of something to say. Logically he had known that this arrangement wouldn’t last forever, that they would be found out somehow, but why
today?
The one day that Wooyoung would have actually liked Seonghwa’s help, and he had blown it.

Before he could say a word, Seonghwa raised a hand. “The two of you have been an interesting case since the start. I’ve never encountered two people so keen on sabotaging the other, but I’ve seen plenty of stranger things, so that didn’t deter me from trying to help the two of you. But some of the stories you’ve both told have been… very outlandish, to say the least. The issue that brought you to my office should not be something you forget, Wooyoung. That leads me to believe that perhaps none of these issues are as real as you made them sound.”
His voice was still gentle as he spoke, but he didn’t sound quite as kind either, and Wooyoung shrunk down in his seat. Shame burned at his cheeks, and he honestly could have cried if he weren’t so shocked by the swift turn of events. As a kid, he had always cried whenever a teacher scolded him in school, and this felt a lot like that. Confident as he was, Wooyoung was still a sensitive soul, and he felt really bad as he looked at Seonghwa right then.
“No, it’s really not - Wooyoung was just confused,” San tried to excuse, and Wooyoung closed his eyes for a moment, because they wouldn’t be able to talk themselves out of this. Not when the atmosphere in the room had already changed. “He had a little too much to drink last night, you see, and I think he might still be a little drunk-”
“It’s four in the afternoon, San,” Wooyoung interrupted, curving a brow. “And I didn’t have anything to drink last night - you of all people would know.” He redirected his focus to Seonghwa, and he exhaled a heavy breath, his heart thumping an erratic pattern. He was about to say something else, but Seonghwa picked up his notebook off of the desk, flipping back several pages.
“Tell me this,” Seonghwa said, looking down at the page. “San, when is your anniversary?”
He looked like a deer in headlights, just like he had the night before when the professor had called them out for leaving the lecture before it was over. “Um.. it was a few months ago?” The response came out like a question, and Wooyoung dropped his head into his hands, because this was all really beginning to crumble now. “Well, I forgot it both years, so it’s hard for me to remember…”
Seonghwa shut his notebook again, and the sound filled the room. “No,
Wooyoung
forgot it both years - that’s what you said, during your first session with me. And now you remember none of that, and you’re screwing up all of the details, which leads me to believe that nothing about your relationship is actually real. Why would you waste my time like this? I am a professional, and I could have been spending this time helping people who
actually
need it.”
Silence. Wooyoung didn’t know what to say, and San clearly didn’t either, both of them staring at Seonghwa as their entire story fell apart. “Is this amusing to you, to waste my time and make a fool of my practice? Was this just some stupid game between friends, to create a fake story of a fake relationship and see how long it would take for me to realize? You took advantage of me by doing that, because I try to be understanding of anyone who comes to sit in this office. That is my job, and I refuse to pass judgement on anyone who is trying to make a change in their life, but the two of you were never trying to do that, were you?”
The hurt in his voice was the worst thing of all, and Wooyoung had never felt worse in his
life.
Why had he organized this stupid plan in the first place? Why hadn’t he cared that he was essentially wasting the time of a professional therapist? He had wanted Seonghwa to like him all along, and he hadn’t even taken the time to consider that it didn’t really matter what Seonghwa’s opinion of him had been prior to today, because he was sure to hate him now regardless.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, but that didn’t make up for anything. “It was my idea - I wanted to pretend to date someone, and San was willing, and…” He couldn’t bring himself to finish the explanation, because Hongjoong’s massive crush was still on the line here. Wooyoung’s entire operation was failing right before his eyes, but he couldn’t throw Hongjoong under the bus like that. Even if it meant that Seonghwa wouldn’t receive the real explanation that he so clearly wanted.
Neither of them attempted to explain any further, and Seonghwa eventually sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m disappointed in both of you for doing that, and I hope that this serves as a lesson to use your heads before you disregard the time and work of other people.” Wooyoung nodded, chewing on his lower lip, his sinuses burning.
“We’re really sorry,” San said, and remorse was clear in his tone. “We didn’t think about how it would make you feel, and - and that was wrong. We were just fooling around-”
“I understand that your intention was to do this for fun, but were you really just fooling around?” Seonghwa asked, and his tone softened this time. Their confusion must have shown, because he clarified what he meant a moment later. “I won’t attempt to understand what the true relationship between the two of you is, because everything I thought I knew about both of you has been proven incorrect, but what I will say is this - there is something clearly going on here. Between the two of you. And maybe you don’t even realize it, but the way you were speaking about each other today - it seemed like you were addressing something deeper than the usual arguments you create.”
He stood up from his chair, brushing a hand over his slacks to ensure that no wrinkles had gathered the fabric. “So while I don’t appreciate that you wasted my time for weeks, I will still say this. If you do figure out whatever is going on between the two of you and decide that you
actually
need my help, you can always give me a call. Now please, leave my office so that I can fill this appointment slot with somebody else.”
Wooyoung and San stood from their seats, still spewing apologies all the way to the door. Seonghwa just nodded and closed it behind them, and then the two of them were left in the hallway once more. They looked at each other, and Wooyoung swallowed around the lump in his throat. “Let’s go, then,” he mumbled, and the two of them hightailed out of there, not terribly keen on explaining the situation to anyone else in the waiting room.
Once they made it to the car, Wooyoung shut his door and leaned back against his seat with a loud groan, fisting his hands in his hair. “God, we fucked up,” he moaned, shaking his head. “That was horrible -
we
are horrible. I’m horrible! Why the hell did I blow it like that? I didn’t even realize what I was saying, and then it was too late, and then he referred back to his notes and caught us in this ridiculous lie and now if he
does
get with Hongjoong, he’ll hate me no matter what!”
His chest was heaving by the time he got all of that out, and San reached over to grab his hand, squeezing it in an attempt to calm him down. “It was horrible,” he agreed, “but there’s nothing we can do about it now. It happened, and it sucked, and I’m honestly sad it’s over because I had a lot of fun being a part of your stupid plan. But we can’t rewind time, and we can’t fix this right now, so it won’t do us any good to agonize over it.”
2."sucked"
3."stupid plan"
“Easier said than done,” Wooyoung mumbled, but he didn’t have the heart to pull his hand away. He liked the warmth of San’s hand, the roughness of his palm. “What do we do now?”
“I guess we leave, and we hope that Hongjoong and Seonghwa will be able to figure out their own feelings. We saw the two of them together - they’re totally into each other. They’ll figure it out.”
I wasn’t talking about them.
But Wooyoung didn’t say that aloud, just nodding and looking down at his lap. What he really wanted to know was what would become of himself and San, if they would ever see each other again, but he couldn’t bring himself to ask. He was too scared to hear the answer.
“Hey, look at me,” San murmured, and Wooyoung did as he asked unconsciously, their eyes meeting in the solitude of San’s car. “It’ll be okay. I promise.” Wooyoung didn’t fully believe him, but he nodded anyway, simply because he
wanted
to believe it. He wanted it all to be okay, even though he had just blown everything sky high, and guilt gnawed at the corners of his mind.
They stared at each other for a moment too long, and San squeezed Wooyoung’s hand one last time before pulling his hand out of his grasp, gripping the gear shift and reversing out of the parking spot. He pulled back out onto the road, and he drove in the direction of Wooyoung’s apartment, the same way they had come.
Internally, Wooyoung wanted to grab the wheel, to force him to pull over. He didn’t want this to be over so soon, right on the verge of something his heart yearned for, but he couldn’t say anything because he couldn’t be sure that any of San’s advances had ever been fully real. What if he had been so caught up in their roles that he had kissed Wooyoung on impulse? What if he regretted it? Wooyoung couldn’t stand to be the person to lay his heart on the line, just for his hopes to be snuffed.
So he just sat there, even as his heart screamed at him to say something. He sat there and stared out the window, watching familiar buildings pass by on the way to his apartment. San fiddled with the radio, but Wooyoung didn’t sing along today, and he felt it when San kept glancing his way but he didn’t turn to face him. Mentally, he kept replaying the moment when he had screwed it all up, and a headache began to pound at his temples.
His apartment came into view a few minutes later, and his heart stuttered in his chest as he sat up in his seat, prepared to open the door once San pulled up to the curb. However, San didn’t stop the car, continuing to drive past the apartment, and Wooyoung whirled around to look at him. “Oh god, is this the part where you take me somewhere secluded and kill me?” he blurted, and that drew a surprised laugh from San, who shook his head.
“Definitely not,” he said, and when he glanced at Wooyoung, his eyes were sparkling again. Suddenly, something had shifted in the air all over again, and Wooyoung’s lips curved into a small smile.
He sat back in his seat, and he was about to cross his arms over his chest when San reached over to take his hand again, a casual gesture that left Wooyoung breathless. “I just want to take you somewhere, to show you something beautiful. Maybe I should have asked you first, but honestly I was working up the courage to drive past your apartment this whole time so I wasn’t fully sure I was going to do it until… well, until I did it.” His words were so endearing in their awkwardness, and it lessened the tension that had gathered along Wooyoung’s shoulders.
“Okay,” Wooyoung agreed, his voice much lighter than before. “Now I’m expecting something amazing, so you better not disappoint me. I love beautiful things.”
“Not so much a beautiful thing,” San clarified, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing from the radio. “More like a beautiful place. But I won’t say anything else - it’s not far, only a few minutes more.”
So they continued to drive, and Wooyoung began to sing along to the radio now that he knew his time with San wasn’t up yet. San joined him, and their voices grew steadily in volume until they were both laughing, practically screaming the lyrics. They complemented each other so well, and Wooyoung really didn’t want to lose this. He hoped he wouldn’t have to.
Eventually, San pulled into a small parking lot, only about ten parking spaces and all of them empty. He parked in the closest one, turning off the car and pocketing his keys. “Come on,” he said to Wooyoung, bracing a hand on the door handle. “It’s not far from here.”
They both got out of the car, and a soft breeze caressed Wooyoung’s hair away from his face. He scanned his eyes over the area, but all he could really see were trees, not another soul in sight. “You know, if you did want to lure me somewhere secluded and kill me, this would be the place,” he pointed out, an awkward chuckle following his words.
“I’m not going to kill you, Wooyoung,” San said again, his teeth showing from behind his lips as he grinned. “I honestly would be too scared to try even if I
did
want to kill you, because I think you would retaliate and kill me first.”
That made absolutely no sense, and Wooyoung raised a brow as he let San lead him down a small dirt path in between the trees, their fingers laced together. “Are you serious? You’re quite literally ripped, and I am quite literally not. If you wanted to kill me, I don’t think I would even have time to say my prayers and beg God to forgive me for my sins.”
San laughed at that, shaking his head. “No, no - you’re underestimating yourself. You’re scary, Wooyoung. I feel like if you put your mind to something, you could probably achieve anything. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a murder attempt executed by you, that’s for sure. You would create some outlandish plan that I would never see coming, and then it would be all over for me.”
This was a ridiculous conversation to be having out here amongst the trees, but Wooyoung was just happy to have left the somber mood from earlier behind. He still felt guilty for what had happened with Seonghwa, but maybe San was right - they couldn’t change any of that now, so agonizing over it would only prolong their suffering.
He was about to open his mouth to say something else, but San squeezed his hand, leading him right into an opening between the trees. Wooyoung gasped, their conversation entirely forgotten as he took in the beauty of this small area, pressing his fingers to his lips. “This is where you picked those flowers for me, isn’t it?” he asked, and San nodded.
A beautiful patch of wildflowers swayed in the breeze right in front of them, all different colors and heights and sizes, vibrant and full of life. “How did you even know about this place?” Wooyoung asked, letting go of San’s hand in order to get closer. He sank to his knees on the ground in front of the patch of flowers, not caring about getting his jeans dirty as he reached out to lightly ghost his fingers over the different petals.
“It’s kind of a long story,” San admitted, coming up to stand behind Wooyoung. “And it’s not really the happiest, so you might not want to hear it right now-”
“No, I want to,” Wooyoung assured, looking over his shoulder to meet San’s eyes. “I want to hear anything about you - I want to hear everything. As long as you want to tell me, of course. But so much of what I know about you has been fake, and - and I want to know more about the
real
Choi San.”
San looked at him for a long moment, blinking eventually as he nodded. “Okay,” he agreed, his chest rising as he took a deep breath. “Well, I’ve known about this place since I was ten years old, and it’s been something of a sanctuary for me since then. My parents died that year, you see, and there’s actually a cemetery a short walk away from this garden.”
Flowers entirely forgotten, Wooyoung rose back to his feet, his eyes wide as he looked at San. “Oh, I’m so sorry - you were so young,” he murmured, and he was the one to reach for San’s hand this time. “What - what happened to them?”
“Car accident,” San answered, a bitter smile tugging at his lips, and Wooyoung remembered something that made his heart stutter for a moment. That one session with Seonghwa, when he had made a comment about San’s driving, and the hurt that flashed across his face had seemed too real to be fake… it made sense now, and a belated sense of guilt washed over him. But he didn’t want to interrupt San, so he kept his mouth shut for once in his life.
San swept his arm to the side, gesturing to the flower patch and the entire small clearing within the trees. “When I first found this place, there weren’t any flowers at all. I used to ride my bike here and just sit for hours, because I was too scared to sit by their graves, too upset. I was living with my grandfather until I turned eighteen, and I spent more time here than I did at home, I think. One day, I was given a packet of wildflower seeds at school, and I planted them here. I came here every day to water them, and it eventually turned into this little garden.”
He met Wooyoung’s eyes then, and his expression softened. “I’ve never brought anyone here before. It’s always been a sanctuary for just me, where I can let go of everything and sit here with the flowers for a little while. But I wanted to bring you flowers that day, and I picked them from here myself, because you were different. I’ve never known anyone like you, Wooyoung, and I wanted to share this with you. I want you to see this part of me along with the rest, because I trust you, and the time I’ve spent with you has really brightened up my life.”
Immeasurably touched by this, Wooyoung didn’t even know what to say right away. “Thank you so much for bringing me here,” he said eventually, and he really did mean it. “This place is beautiful, and to know that you planted it yourself - that makes it even better.” He smiled, and San smiled back, and something about those dimples gave Wooyoung the courage he needed to continue.
“You know… a lot of those things I said during our session today were true. About not being sure how you feel. And it’s really because the way I feel for you isn’t so fake anymore. When you kissed me, I really wanted you to. When you hold my hand, my heart forgets how to beat for a second. But since our entire relationship up until now has been fake, I didn’t know if I was the only one who felt that way. For all I know, you’re just really absorbed in your fake persona, you know?”
San shook his head, a breathy laugh passing over his lips. “Oh, Wooyoung, you are so endearing. I really hope you know that.” Wooyoung just stared at him, and his smile widened. “Obviously I like you. If I didn’t like you, I wouldn’t have kept up with all of this in the first place. It started out as something just for fun, yes, but a big part of the reason why I agreed in the first place is because I think you’re really, really cute.”
That made Wooyoung blush, and he smacked San’s chest, though his heart was soaring. “Well, I’ve been panicking over how hot you are since the moment we met,” he admitted, and San threw his head back as he laughed this time, exposing the pretty curve of his throat. Really, everything about him was pretty, and it was driving Wooyoung positively mad.
“Good to know that the panic was mutual, then. I couldn’t stop looking at you, most of the time. I almost drove off the road on the way to therapy more than once, because I just wanted to watch you, but that’s not really a good idea when I was the one driving the car.” His expression turned a bit sheepish, and he looked adorable.
“God, I love being gay,” Wooyoung blurted, and that made San laugh all over again. “I’m serious! What a sad life it would be, if I didn’t like boys, because then I wouldn’t like
you,
and that would really suck for me. Every other man I’ve dated hasn’t been able to keep up with my extreme level of wit, I hope you know. But you’re not
that
far behind me, so I’m sure I can teach you a thing or two to bring you up to my level.”
“So, are you saying you want to date me, then?” San said with a wink, and Wooyoung’s cheeks heated, because he hadn’t intended to sound so bold. He didn’t know what to say, opening and closing his mouth soundlessly, and San took pity on him. “You’re adorable - I want to date you too, don’t worry. No need to panic.”
Wooyoung smacked him again, breathing a sigh of relief. “So you really did want to kiss me last night, then? You didn’t just do it for the sake of our fake relationship?”
“Wooyoung,
no one else was there,”
San said, speaking slowly as if to get the point through Wooyoung’s thick skull. “Every time I acted like your boyfriend when no one was around, it wasn’t fake. I wanted to hold your hand, and call you those silly nicknames, and flirt with you. I
wanted
to kiss you, more than anything. And I would like to do it again, if you would allow me.”
Struck dumb by the admission, Wooyoung just nodded rapidly after a moment, and San was still giggling as he leaned in. He pressed gentle fingers beneath Wooyoung’s chin to tilt his head upwards, and their lips met for the second time in twenty four hours. This kiss was just as wonderful as the last, and Wooyoung felt a little weak in the knees until San wrapped an arm around his waist, keeping him in place.
Now that no uncertainty remained, he could enjoy the kiss more fully, and Wooyoung was the first to deepen it this time. He leaned in closer, wrapping his arms around San’s neck and pressing against his lips with his tongue. The kiss was deep but relaxed, no sense of urgency any more, or uncertainty, or anything other than enjoyment for both of them. They stayed like that for a long time, San’s hands roaming over Wooyoung’s waist, and when they finally pulled away their breathing was labored.
“God,” Wooyoung exhaled, his lips warm now, “you know how to kiss. I’m impressed, and impressing me is a hard thing to do.”
San looked at him through his lashes, eyes half-lidded and lips swollen. “Well, it was in your fine print, wasn’t it? ‘If you’re a bad kisser, don’t bother to call. I’ll know.’ I happen to be pretty confident in my skills, so I had a feeling you wouldn’t turn me away.” He winked again, and he
really
needed to stop doing that before Wooyoung passed out right there and crushed his precious flowers.
“So… does this mean we’re dating now? Like, for real this time?”
With a grin, San grasped both of Wooyoung’s hands in his own. “Wooyoung, will you do me the pleasure of being my
real
boyfriend? That entails a wealth of pet names, and plenty of gestures of affection, and - well, basically all of the things I was already doing, but with no cover of a fake relationship anymore. Plus a lot more kissing, and a lot less arguing. Sound good to you?”
“Sounds perfect,” Wooyoung answered, a grin pulling at his lips as he tugged San closer by their joined hands, craning his neck to peck his lips. “You know, the last thing I expected out of my operation was for
me
to get a boyfriend - well, a real one. Not exactly the outcome I wanted at the time, but I’ll take it. Hongjoong’s on his own, now.”
2."peck his lips"
“Oh, I think he’ll figure it out,” San murmured. “Now, stop talking so I can kiss you again, alright?” Wooyoung laughed against San’s lips, his heart full and his mind spinning. This hadn’t been the expected outcome, and the two of them had wound up like all of those other fake dating stories, and Wooyoung couldn’t even bring himself to care about the cliche as he kissed his
real
boyfriend this time.
~
At the end of May each year, Hongjoong always threw a party at his apartment before the start of the summer. His apartment was
big,
and he always invited a lot of people, and Wooyoung was fully prepared to let loose when the day of the party finally rolled around. Hongjoong had yet to meet San, so this would be the perfect opportunity for that as well.
San was nervous as they took the stairs up to the right floor within Hongjoong’s apartment complex, adjusting his clothing with fidgeting hands until Wooyoung finally just reached over and grabbed his hand to make him stop. “There’s no need to be nervous, San,” he appeased, though he did find it adorable. “You literally watched him fall on his face in front of an entire lecture hall. He’s probably the least intimidating person on earth.”
“Yeah, but he’s still your best friend,” San protested, though he did seem to relax a little bit at the mention of Hongjoong’s lecture hall incident. “I just want him to like me, that’s all.”
“He will,” Wooyoung promised, and he really did mean it. San was one of those people who
everyone
liked. Other people their age, and little kids, and grandmothers, and moms - literally everyone. He had nothing to worry about, but Wooyoung appreciated that he cared enough to worry anyway.
They walked down the hall hand in hand, and they stopped right in front of Hongjoong’s door. Already, the music carried through the door, and Wooyoung grinned. “Now, come on,” he said, resting his hand on the doorknob. “Let’s just have some fun, alright? He’s gonna like you, and you’ll probably get a few new friends out of this whole thing. Just be yourself.”
He waited for San to nod, and then he twisted the knob and opened the door, for Hongjoong had left it open today for the sake of the party. The living room space was vast, and plenty of people already mulled around with cups in their hands, balloons tied to the chairs and couches. Hongjoong had always possessed quite the eye for design, and he was just as proficient in his ability to decorate. “Come on, let’s go find him.”
San followed along behind Wooyoung, and they greeted the people they passed, even though Wooyoung didn’t know them all and San didn’t know anyone. They eventually found Hongjoong in the kitchen, filling up a few plates with appetizers and snacks, and he didn’t notice that he had company until Wooyoung tapped him on the shoulder. Jumping in surprise, he would have dropped the bowl in his hands if San didn’t reach out to grab it just in time. “Sorry,” Wooyoung said, though he wasn’t sorry at all.
Taking the bowl back from San, Hongjoong smiled sheepishly. “Thanks for grabbing that. You’re San, then. I already know what you look like, because Wooyoung has shown me, like, a million pictures.” That made Wooyoung blush, and he shoved Hongjoong into the counter.
“Yeah, that’s me,” San confirmed, an easy smile playing over his lips despite his nerves. “It’s wonderful to finally meet you. I’ve heard all kinds of stories about you, and I know you’re Wooyoung’s best friend, so I’ve been looking forward to this. Thank you for having me - the decorations are beautiful.”
“Oh, thank you! I get a bit over the top with decoration, but I'm glad you like it. Whatever Wooyoung has told you about me, just know that ninety percent of it is probably exaggerated to the point of not even being true anymore. He has a talent for doing that, and I’m usually the one who suffers for it.”
Wooyoung rolled his eyes, interrupting before they could say anything else. “Decorations, introductions, blah blah - you guys are
boring,”
he said. “I feel like I’m overhearing a conversation between two middle aged women, for fuck’s sake. I’ll make you both a drink, and then you’ll
actually
get to know each other.”
He turned away without waiting for a response from either of them, but Hongjoong managed to snag his sleeve, keeping him there in the kitchen. “Um, Wooyoung, not yet for me, okay? I, um… I had the courage to ask someone to come, and I don’t want to drink before he arrives, because I’ve really already made a fool of myself in front of him enough times and if I do it again I’m scared he might just leave and never talk to me again.” A blush colored his cheeks, and Wooyoung was about to ask for more details when the front door opened again.
All three of them looked in that direction, and Wooyoung’s blood ran cold, his heart coming to a complete stop inside of his chest. “Oh, he’s here!” Hongjoong said, but Wooyoung heard his voice like he was underwater, the sounds of the party around them dulling down to nothing, because he hadn’t seen the man who had just walked in since he had essentially kicked Wooyoung and San out of his office that day.
It was
Seonghwa.
Hongjoong had invited Seonghwa, and Wooyoung really should have ducked behind the counter and ran away, but he couldn’t move. San was frozen at his side as well, both of them just watching as Seonghwa approached through the sea of people, a smile lighting up his face as he found Hongjoong.
“Hey, the place looks great!” he called as he approached, not even noticing Wooyoung and San yet, all of his focus on Hongjoong. “You really have an eye for this stuff. Thanks for-” He finally swept his eyes around the kitchen once he was just a few feet away, and he stopped speaking abruptly when he recognized Hongjoong’s two companions, his eyes blowing wide and his mouth falling open.
All three of them just stared at each other for way too long, no one willing to break the silence. Seonghwa looked lovely as ever, a flowy shirt draped over his shoulders, his pants clinging to his legs in all of the right places. But his expression did not match the image, so surprised that Wooyoung half expected him to fall to the floor.
Hongjoong was looking between all three of them, his brows furrowed in confusion. “Um, do you… do you guys know each other? Wooyoung, I had no idea - how do you know Seonghwa? Or do you not know each other? In which case, why are you all staring at each other?” No one rushed to answer him, and he waited a few more seconds before speaking again. “Um,
hello?
Is reality glitching or something? Oh my god, I watched a movie about that the other day, this can’t be happening-”
“Shut up,” Wooyoung interrupted, and Hongjoong let out a sigh of relief, running a hand through his hair. Wooyoung didn’t know what else to say, though, and when Seonghwa blinked a few times and closed his gaping mouth, he braced himself for whatever the therapist would have to say. Hongjoong was going to
kill
him, no matter how this went, and he gulped.
“Are - are you two together?” Seonghwa asked, pointing between Wooyoung and San. “Did you actually figure out whatever your problem was?”
Mouth completely dry, Wooyoung nodded, and San followed suit. “Um… yeah,” San offered, and Wooyoung was pretty sure he hadn’t blinked once since Seonghwa had walked through the front door. “We have been since that day, actually. I’m, um, sorry,” he finished lamely, and Wooyoung elbowed him in the ribs, because now really wasn’t the time to rehash all of that with Hongjoong standing
right there.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been so confused in my life,” Hongjoong deadpanned, and Wooyoung winced. “Seonghwa, you know Wooyoung
and
San? How - Wooyoung, why didn’t you tell me that?”
Seonghwa spoke again before Wooyoung could even attempt to answer, and he debated grabbing the closest bottle of liquor and downing the whole thing to make this less painful, but he managed to restrain himself. “How do
you
know them? What are they even doing here?”
“I’ve known Wooyoung forever - he’s my best friend! So I’m a little confused as to why he’s staring at you like you’re a - a ghost or something. Care to explain?” He looked right at Wooyoung then, and there was nothing left to do but comply. He had dug himself into this hole, and now he couldn’t climb his way out of it.
San reached over to squeeze his hand, but it didn’t bring him much comfort this time around, not with Hongjoong and Seonghwa both staring into his soul. With a deep breath, Wooyoung winced and forced himself to tell the full story now. “Um, this is going to sound really bad, so please don’t kill me, okay?” He plastered an exaggerated smile onto his face, but neither of them agreed to his terms, and the expression fell away a moment later to a more resigned one.
“Fine,” he ceded, exhaling and rubbing a hand over his forehead. “So, the reason why Seonghwa knows me is because San and I went to him for couples therapy a few months back.” He wanted to get the entire story out at once, but Hongjoong was quick to interrupt, making that pretty much impossible.
“But you guys weren’t even dating back then!” he protested, and Wooyoung had never seen him look so confused before. Which was saying something, because Hongjoong was confused about a lot of things most of the time. “Or did you just not tell me? Because that’s even worse-”
“No, I promise, we weren’t dating back then. But, um… do you remember when you told me at the cafe a while ago, about how you found out Seonghwa was a couples therapist? That was kind of the catalyst for - please don’t interrupt me again, or I’ll never get to explain!” Hongjoong had opened his mouth, panic coming over his features, but he did as Wooyoung asked and kept quiet.
“So, you told me that, and then I had a genius idea which maybe wasn’t so genius after all. But I wanted to help you, to be the best wingman ever, so I made a flyer and put it up at the Coffee Bean-”
“You hate the Coffee Bean!”
Wooyoung sighed, moments away from ripping his hair out and throwing it at Hongjoong to make him shut up. “Yeah, I
know,
but that was the whole point. If I put it up at the Early Bird, you would’ve seen it, and my plan never would have worked. A few days later, San called me, and we basically made an agreement that he would be my fake boyfriend and we would go to couples therapy together to learn more about Seonghwa. So we made our first appointment, and we went, and we argued with each other about the stupidest things and it was actually way more fun than it should have been.”
“So you actually weren’t hitting on me that day, when you kept asking me questions about my love life,” Seonghwa realized, and Wooyoung nodded.
Hongjoong yanked on Wooyoung’s sleeve, his eyes bugging out of his head.
“Wooyoung,”
he hissed, “why the
fuck
would you do that-”
“Let me finish!” Wooyoung blurted, and he didn’t wait for either of them to agree before pushing on. “We went for a few sessions, and then we planned a stakeout. We actually… um, this is going to sound
really
bad, but we wore undercover outfits and went to your night class to collect some data. We just wanted to observe our test subjects out in the wild, to better understand their behavior-”
“Wooyoung, what the fuck is wrong with you!” Hongjoong burst out, and Wooyoung groaned, dropping his head into his hands. “That’s so-”
“Wait, wait,” Seonghwa interrupted, and of course Hongjoong shut up when
he
was the one to ask. “That was the day - were you the two people who left before class was dismissed? Our professor made his policy very clear on the first day, and no one dared to leave early after that. Except for that one day, and I’m pretty sure the people who left were dressed in all black… and wait, oh my god! You said something about your grandma dying, and you said that to me in therapy at one point too!”
Seonghwa was way smarter than Hongjoong, then - not that Wooyoung hadn’t figured that out already, but the confirmation was still nice. “Yeah,” Wooyoung admitted. “That was us.”
If Hongjoong had been distressed before, now he was moments away from bursting a blood vessel. “You have got to be kidding me,” he said, shaking his head. “That was the day I fell. Wasn’t it? So you’re telling me that you saw me fall on my face, and that was San’s first impression of me? I’ve been replaying that moment in my mind ever since it happened, and now you have just successfully made it even
more
embarrassing, which really shouldn’t have been possible. So thanks for that.”
He sounded so dejected that Wooyoung couldn’t help it - he laughed. Just a small chuckle, but once he started, he couldn’t stop. “Sorry - I’m almost done with the story, let me just finish,” he said through his giggles. “It’s not funny, I know. Well, it kind of is, but-”
“Wooyoung,” San muttered. “Just finish the story.”
“Right.” He cleared his throat, forcing his amusement down. “So, we left the class early, and when we made it back to the parking lot, San kissed me. But I wasn’t sure if it was real or fake, and then Hongjoong started coming down the path, so I ran all the way home in the pouring rain. We had therapy again the next day, and that was the day that I stumbled over my words and blew the whole thing. And I really felt so bad, Seonghwa - I’m sorry that we couldn’t tell you the full story back then, but I didn’t want to throw Hongjoong under the bus and give away his crush on you. But at least now I can tell you!”
“Wooyoung,” Hongjoong said, and for some strange reason, he didn’t sound as thrilled as Wooyoung was expecting. “I invited Seonghwa here as a
friend.
And now he’s going to watch me murder you with my bare hands, and he’s going to call the police and have me arrested, and he’ll never speak to me again. So thanks for that. Really, your plan was top of the line. Absolutely genius - would you rather I strangle you, or use a kitchen knife?”
He reached for the block of knives on the counter, and Wooyoung slapped a hand over his mouth. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry! I thought - you invited him here, so I thought you finally asked him out, since you’ve been talking about your crush on him since the day you met him, practically-”
San reached out and covered Wooyoung’s mouth with his own hand this time, effectively cutting him off from making things any worse. “Not helping, darling,” he said, though Wooyoung could tell he was trying his hardest not to smile.
The only one who had yet to speak since the end of the story was Seonghwa, and they all looked over at him then, Hongjoong with a steak knife in his hand. Seonghwa stared back at them, the corners of his mouth twitching. “I don’t think there’s any need for a knife, Hongjoong,” he said, and Hongjoong put it down right away. He never would have done so if Wooyoung had been the one to ask, and he would have pouted if San’s hand wasn’t still covering his mouth.
“That was a very stupid plan,” he said to Wooyoung this time, “but I will admit that it makes for quite the entertaining story. Consider me amused - I’m less inclined to resent you for wasting my time, after hearing all of that. You were dedicated, and I do believe that you had good intentions, no matter how deluded.”
He redirected his attention to Hongjoong, and he stepped closer until nothing but the counter separated the two of them. “And as for you… well, I’ve had a pathetic crush on you since the day we met too, so don’t be embarrassed. I told my best friend Yeosang all about you-”
Now, it was rare for Wooyoung to be shocked by
anything,
but he positively gaped at Seonghwa’s mention of his friend, yanking San’s hand away from his mouth.
“Yeosang?
As in, ‘barista at the Early Bird’ Yeosang? As in, Yeosang who witnessed Hongjoong come and rant to me about you for months straight? He overheard so many conversations! Does that mean - did you
know?”
Seonghwa laughed into his hand, his eyes shining under the kitchen lights. “I knew that Hongjoong had a crush on me, that’s all I knew. He told me your name, but there are so many people named Wooyoung - I really didn’t think anything of it when you and San came to my office. I don’t drink coffee, so I’ve never actually gone to the Early Bird. If I had seen you there with Yeosang I would’ve figured it out, probably. But now… well, everything makes sense, now.” He shrugged, like this entire situation wasn’t absolutely ridiculous.
“Wait, so you
knew
I liked you?” Hongjoong blurted, his eyes wide open in horror. Wooyoung worried that he might pick up the knife again and use it on himself - he was really taking hit after hit today. “I said so many embarrassing things - oh my god, this is horrible. I’m going to kill Yeosang, and I’m going to kill you, Wooyoung, and - well, I’ve only just met you and I do like you, but I’m afraid I’ll have to kill you too, San. No offense.”
“None taken.”
“There is no need for murder,” Seonghwa interjected, and he was smiling wide now. “Because I’ve known all of these things, and I still like you. I watched you fall on your face, and I was deceived by your ridiculous friends, and Yeosang told me all of the things you said about how much you liked me, and I
still like you.
This is all completely outrageous, but you have to admit that it’s really fucking funny. Mostly at your expense, but still. It’s funny.”
Hongjoong didn’t respond right away, looking between the three of them, but they were all smiling now and he couldn’t hold onto his anger for long. He sighed, running his hands over his face, a begrudging smile tugging on his lips as well. “Are you sure? I mean, do you really like me after all that?”
“You know, usually when someone tells you that they like you, you don’t ask them ‘are you sure?’” Wooyoung pointed out, and he laughed when Hongjoong shot a glare his way. “He likes you, idiot. Don’t ask me how, but he does. Now, make it official already so I don’t have to listen to you recount at exactly what point Seonghwa left the lecture to go to the bathroom - I don’t want to hear about that ever again.”
Hongjoong tried to smack him, but Wooyoung saw it coming and darted out of the way, cackling maniacally. Before Hongjoong could come after him, Seonghwa came around to their side of the counter, stepping in between them. “Wooyoung is right, you know - it’s not too late for you to ask me to this party as more than a friend. It’s only just started.”
They stared at each other, and Wooyoung clung to San’s arm, mentally willing Hongjoong to not fuck this up. “Um, I’m still extremely embarrassed, but - well, I wanted to ask you here as a date originally and I got too nervous. You looked really pretty that day,” Hongjoong admitted, a blush shading his cheeks. “But, um, would you go out with me? To this party, even though we’re already here?”
Seonghwa giggled, a huge smile on his face. “Of course I will,” he said, and he leaned forward to press a long kiss to Hongjoong’s lips. Wooyoung burst out in applause, whooping loudly, and San did the same right by his side, which directed the attention of every single person at the party towards the kitchen.
“Mission accomplished!” Wooyoung exclaimed, and San grinned at him. They high fived each other, and neither of them could wipe the smile off of their face now that no lingering secrets remained. “Here, let me make the drinks now that this is all finally solved-” However, Wooyoung cut himself off when the door opened, glancing in that direction and stopping in his tracks when he saw who had just entered the room.
“Kang Yeosang, you have some fucking explaining to do!” Hongjoong yelled, breaking away from Seonghwa to head for the door. Wooyoung burst into laughter at that, leaning on San for support.
Truthfully, his operation had failed in a lot of ways, but the end result had still worked out better than he could have ever planned. Hongjoong had finally asked Seonghwa out, and Wooyoung had a decidedly
real
boyfriend of his own. He couldn’t ask for anything more, really, and when he looked up at San his heart swelled with affection for him.
“Hey, I should make a post about this whole ordeal on Facebook,” San teased.
“Oh, shut up, will you?”
