Isagi was shaking in excitement as he stood inside of the train. His parents had managed to get him a ticket for an exhibition match in Tokyo. Re Ale, one of the most powerful teams, was having an exhibition match here in Japan and Isagi couldn’t wait to watch it. Once he reached his stop, he got out and looked around. He took out his phone and looked at the time, he still had some time before the stadium doors opened. Isagi decided to look around Tokyo for a bit, the city was a lot different compared to his hometown. He noticed a lot of advertisements for the match plastered all over the city. His stomach growled a bit and decided he would get something quick to eat, not wanting to spend money on overpriced food at the stadium. He stood on the sidewalk with a bunch of other people as they waited to cross. Isagi took his phone out and checked the directions to make sure he was going the right way, what he didn’t hear were the people around him.
“Hey look out!”
A loud voice brought Isagi back to reality as he watched a young man flipping over a car and flying…
FLYING STRAIGHT TO HIM!!
Isagi started panicking and didn’t know where to go, he closed his eyes to brace for impact but nothing happened. Opening his eyes the young man, who seemed roughly his age as he could still see bits of baby fat on his face, landed perfectly and stood straight up.
“Thank goodness I didn’t lose it.”
Isagi saw the young man walking away and noticed the printing on the piece of paper he was holding. Excitement ran through Isagi’s body and quickly ran to him.
“Hey!” He noticed that the taller boy wasn’t stopping so he ran even more and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Hey!”
“What,” teal eyes looked down on him and made Isagi flinch a bit.
“He looks really pretty,”
Isagi mentally shook his head, “Uh are you okay? I mean you did some crazy gymnastic moves back there.”
“I’m fine.”
“That’s good…hey I noticed you had a ticket for the Re Al exhibition match today, and so do I!” Isagi pulled his own ticket out and showed the taller boy. “I was wondering if you wanted to go together?”
“No thanks, I don’t waste my time with NPCs,” Rin was about to walk away, his stomach growled a bit.
“Oh are you hungry too? I myself was about to go get some food before the doors opened.”
“Fine, but I’m picking the spot.”
“That’s fine with me,” Isagi gave the other a smile, “my name is Isagi Yoichi!”
Isagi Yoichi!”
“My name is Ito…It’s just Rin.”
Isagi blinked a few times, “Okay, Rin, I’ll be in your care!”
*****
Rin had brought them to a special Japanese restaurant. Isagi found it adorable at how different it was compared to other food joints in Tokyo. A waitress greeted them and brought them to their table, where they sat down on the tatami and ordered their food.
“So Rin-san, are you from around here?”
Rin glared at the shorter boy, “No, I live in Kamakura, and please drop the honorifics.”
Isagi was jaw slacked, “Ehh?! You live as far as I do! I’m from Saitama!” He regained his composure. “So you must be really excited to see the match then huh? I heard a prodigy from Japan is going to be playing.” Isagi noticed how Rin’s jaw clenched at his words, before he could get another word in, their waiter returned with their food.
“Please enjoy!”
“Thank you!” Isagi gave him a small smile and looked down at his plate of curry, he put his hands together in a prayer motion, “Thank you for the meal!”
Rin did the same thing except much quieter and started to eat. Isagi saw in the corner of his eye and noticed how cute Rin looked eating his food.
“So you must really like sea bream with ochazuke.”
“It helps relax me.”
Once they finished their meal and paid for their food, Isagi noticed they still had time.
“Anything else we can do?”
Rin shrugged his shoulders and the two started walking. His teal eyes spotted his reflection in the mirror. Isagi noticed his companion wasn’t with him and noticed Rin looking at a building.
“Disgusting,” is what Isagi could make out when he got closer to Rin.
Blue eyes noticed the taller boy balling his hands into fists. “Hey, is everything okay?”
Rin’s teal eyes became cold and it made Isagi flinch. Before Rin could say anything, a couple of little girls walked past them. They looked like sisters and they were holding ice cream.
“Hey switch with me, I don’t want vanilla anymore.”
The older sister shook her head, “Nope, you asked for vanilla so you get vanilla,” she smirked at her younger sister.
Rin felt like he was brought back in time when he was young, how Sae would buy them ice pops when they were younger.
“Rin?” “Rin?”
“We still have plenty of time and I’m kind of craving something sweet.”
So the two found a cute dessert shop and sat down at a booth. Isagi took a good look at the menu, debating whether or not he wanted to bring up as to why Rin said disgusting beforehand. Their server came to the table and the two ordered their things. Once the server left, Isagi was looking around the cafe, trying to distract himself.
“Something’s troubling you,” Rin’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Ah, sorry,” Isagi rubbed the back of his neck, “I was just thinking.”
“Of what?”
The shorter of the two was twiddling his thumbs, “Well you were looking at the window of a building and I heard you say ‘disgusting’.”
Rin clicked his tongue, “It’s nothing, I just saw how messy my hair looked.”
Rin
“But your hair is perfect though!”
Rin took a good look at Isagi, as if he was studying him. The intense look he was receiving made Isagi fidget in his seat. Thankfully their waiter came with their orders. Isagi had gotten a parfait with a glass of water, while Rin got a mont blanc dessert with a cup of hot cider. The two ate in peace until they were done and paid for their things.
Isagi took his phone out and checked the time, “I guess we should head over to the stadium now, huh?”
Isagi
“Sure.”
The two continued their walk until they reached their destination. There was already a big crowd waiting in line to enter. Isagi saw people wearing jerseys for the two teams playing today alongside foreigners.
“Wow, big crowd.” Blue eyes fell upon his companion who seemed hesitant about moving. “Rin, is everything okay? Are you not a fan of big crowds?”
“It’s not that,” Rin was gripping his shoulder bag pretty tightly, “I’m debating whether or not, if it was a mistake coming here.”
“What do you mean, a mistake?”
The taller boy just shook his head, “Nevermind, we’re here anyways, might as well head in.”
Isagi had to run up to catch up with the boy. The two exited out of the bag check area and finally got to the lobby of the stadium. There were vendors selling food, drinks and merchandise.
“Hey Rin, let’s sit together!”
“Why?”
“Well because no one that I know is attending the match today.”
Rin raised a brow, “And what if I know someone here?”
Rin
Isagi shrugged, “Then introduce me to them, that’s what someone with manners would do.”
The taller one just rolled his eyes, “I don’t know anyone else here, so I guess I have no choice but to sit with you.”
“Jeez Rin, way to make a guy feel special,” Isagi playfully elbowed him, “come on!”
The two managed to get some decent seats despite there being a whole lot of people already sitting. Isagi cheered when the announcer introduced the Kawasaki Breakers, though the entire stadium shook when Re Al was introduced.
“And the player that everyone should keep their eye on, Itoshi Sae!!”
Itoshi Sae!!”
Isagi winced as the cheering became a lot louder when Itoshi Sae was announced over the speakers. He noticed how Rin froze at the Japanese player’s name.
*****
While the match started, Isagi was not only focused on the game but also the person sitting next to him. He could see how different Rin’s body language was each time Sae made a play or scored. Isagi found himself cheering whenever Sae made a goal. The whistle blew, signaling that the first half of the match was over. Isagi took a deep breath as he tried to calm himself down, it had been a while since he’s seen a professional game in person.
“Man, Re Al is some team, huh Rin,” Isagi noticed he didn’t get a response, “Rin?” He looked over and noticed his companion was gone. Isagi looked around and couldn’t find the taller boy. He got up and quickly ran hoping to find Rin.
*****
Rin found himself unable to concentrate on the match before him. He could see the difference in skill between him and his brother. Their little match was nothing compared to how Sae was playing in the exhibition match. Standing up, Rin quickly left, not bothering to say goodbye to Isagi.
“Then again, why should I care about some random lukewarm idiot I just met.”
Rin found himself going to one of the vendors and buying a ball. He managed to find an empty soccer field and started dribbling and kicking the ball into the net. Rin found himself stumbling as he tried to recreate the moves his brother was using in the match. Angry, he ended up kicking the ball with a powerful kick, making it spin and hit the top left of the goal net.
“I didn’t know you played,” Rin turned around and spotted Isagi walking over to the net and grabbing the ball, “guess the game got you fired up, huh?” He threw the ball back to Rin.
Catching it, Rin let out a snarl and dropped the ball. He swung his right leg, making the ball fly to the goal. Isagi saw this and quickly ducked before the ball had a chance to hit face. The sound of it hitting the net rang through his ears.
“Hey, watch it! You could have killed me!”
“Why are you here?”
Isagi went to grab the ball again, “Well you disappeared on me. I was lucky that one of the vendors told me you bought a ball so I tried to look for a field and hoped you were there. Took a while though.”
“Well, you didn’t have to look for me.”
Isagi shrugged and started to juggle the ball with his legs and feet, “Well I got worried, you didn’t seem okay during the game.”
“It’s none of your business,” Rin walked over and snatched his ball away, “we’re just strangers, that’s all.”
Isagi just looked at Rin, “Who cares if we’re strangers, it’s still nice to make sure someone’s okay even if they didn’t ask for help.”
“Well I don’t want your help,” Rin let out a growl, “so you can go back and finish watching that match.”
“Itoshi Sae is your brother, isn’t he?” That made the taller boy freeze. “I kind of just put the pieces together, it wasn’t hard especially how you acted whenever Sae had the ball. You seemed pretty pissed at him.”
Rin clicked his tongue, “It’s just a thing between siblings.”
Rin
“SIblings huh? Can’t relate since I’m an only child though.” Isagi moved to the side as Rin began to kick the ball around. He felt his heart beating, it beat even more than when he first watched Noel Noa play on the TV, and even more than it did during the exhibition match.
Rin’s movements were just…
Rin
Beautiful 美丽
He could obviously see the difference in playstyle between the two brothers. Even if Sae was a prodigy, Rin’s skills just moved Isagi a lot more.
“I gotta say, you’re a lot better than your brother.”
Rin froze and looked at Isagi with a blank look on his face, “Wh-what did you just say?”
“I said, you’re a lot better than your brother. I’m not saying this just so I could meet Sae,” Isagi had a wide smile on his face and Rin swore he could feel the ice cold walls surrounding his heart starting to melt. “I really mean it Rin, you’re
really
good.”
Rin had a shocked expression on his face. He just couldn’t believe what Isagi was saying, then again he was just some half baked NPC. Rin wanted to believe that Isagi was lying to him, everyone knew that Sae was
better
than him. Maybe….just maybe
He could have this one moment
“Thanks,” Rin wished he had his little owl fidget pin so he could play with it.
Isagi giggled, “No problem! Hey from one footballer to another, let me learn some of your skills!”
The taller boy snorted, “Please, I highly doubt you have the stats to keep up.”
“Well, maybe not with the outfit I got on, perhaps another time?”
Rin was hesitant but nodded, “Sure, sounds good. Our cities aren’t too far apart so a train ride won’t be too bad.”
“Awesome!” Isagi ran over to where he put his crossbody bag and pulled out his phone. “Here, put your number in here and I’ll text you so you can add mine.” Rin nodded again and entered his numbers into Isagi’s phone. “Hey, how old are you?”
“I’m fifteen.”
Isagi’s jaw dropped, “Fi-fifteen?! And your parents let you go to Tokyo all by yourself?!!”
“My parents really don’t care what I do, they’re rarely home anyways.”
Isagi felt his heart shatter, “I’m sorry.”
Isagi
“Don’t be,” Rin looked up and noticed that the sun was starting to set. “We should probably head to the train station before it gets too late.”
“Good idea!” Once the two grabbed the rest of their stuff, Isagi just stopped, “Uh, do you mind leading the way? I’m kind of bad with directions.”
Rin raised a brow, “What are you, five?”
“I’m sixteen! You brat,” Isagi playfully shoved Rin, who just barely moved. “Have some respect for your senpai!”
The younger snorted, “Not going to happen. Sixteen years old and terrible with directions, how embarrassing.” Rin began to walk away and looked over his shoulder. “You coming or what?”
“You’re a brat, you know that?”
A playful smirk appeared on Rin’s lips, “Not my fault you’ve got a shitty sense of direction.”
*****
For the next few months, Rin and Isagi had gone back and forth to each other’s cities to hang out. Mainly it was Rin going out of his way to go to Saitama, Isagi felt bad and tried to offer the younger money as compensation, but Rin refused. Over the time they spent together playing soccer, Rin had gotten to meet Isagi’s parents, who were astonished at the handsome young lad their son called friend. Isagi found himself falling in love with his junior while Rin found the walls he put up after his fallout with his brother, being torn down. It got to a point where the two couldn’t really see each other, due to games and finals making their way, so they were able to text one another.
Isagi’s phone pinged on his desk as he was studying, he picked it up and smiled at Rin’s text.
[Good luck with the game tomorrow]
[Thanks Rin!] [谢谢 Rin!]
Unfortunately, Isagi’s team had lost and he found himself downtrodden. As he arrived home, his parents had announced a letter had arrived, addressed to him. Isagi opened it and it was about a soccer program called ‘Blue Lock’. Excitement ran through his veins and he quickly ran to his room and jumped on his bed. He pulled out his phone and began to text Rin. Isagi was a bit worried that Rin didn’t answer him right away, but guessed that the younger one was busy with school or practice. A few hours later, Isagi’s phone pinged, alerting him of a text message. His heart was pounding, he hoped Rin also got a letter to join the Blue Lock program.
Isagi fell onto the floor and his phone slipped out of his grasp. Running up to his room were both of his parents.
“Yoi-chan, is everything okay?”
“Yoichi, what’s wrong?” “Yoichi,怎么了?”
Isagi turned to look at his parents and tears fell down his face.
Isagi
[Hey Rin! So bad news, my team lost.]
[Good news is, that I got a letter to this program called Blue Lock]
