COURSEWORK SPECIFICATIONS

PREREQUISITE[s]: None

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Research Methods in Education course is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills required to conduct rigorous and ethical research in the field of education management . This course delves into various research paradigms, methodologies, and data analysis techniques, enabling students to critically evaluate and design educational management research projects. Emphasizing a hands-on approach, the course equips students with the tools necessary to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of educational management practices and policies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Throughout the course, students will:

Be able to conduct research in a systematic manner in topics related to educational management.

Understand how decisions are made within the organisation using educational research techniques.

Know how research programmes are planned and implemented

Be adept at developing a fundamental understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods and application of education research methodologies.

Course Learning Outcomes:

CLO1: Create a research framework which is related to educational organisations . (C6, PLO1)

CLO2: Demonstrate appropriate research procedures to manage literature review and data collection. (P5, PLO3)

CLO3: Propose a research proposal that can solve the identified research problem in educational organisations. (A5, PLO10)

COURSEWORK 1: Individual Assignment (Research Framework) CLO1 - 40%

Learning Objective (CLO1):

Create a research framework which is related to educational organizations. (C6, PLO1)

This assignment allows you to review recent research trends in the area of educational management. By reviewing articles, you should be able to identify a research topic of interest that you will consider for writing assignments 1 and 3. After deciding the research topic, prepare a research framework for your study, which is considered as laying a foundation for assignment 3.

Tasks:

To complete Assignment 1 (Research framework of the study), you need to do the following:

Read peer-reviewed articles published in reputable journals and published in the last 5 years (except for the theories and models). Refer to the list of suggested journals provided at the end of this assignment guideline.

Decide on a research topic that is current, interesting, and relevant for preparing Assignment 1 and 3 (research proposal). Ensure that your topic is within the scope of educational management.

Identify a research problem that is worth investigating and justify it with your views and opinions. Remember that the framework and proposal (Assignments 1 and 3) that you prepare for this course, PEM 6301E, will be considered in completing the course PES 9999E Final Year Project (FYP). So, FYP is an extension of this course.

Discuss your perspectives about the chosen research problem. Justify the need for the study and why it is important to investigate the selected research problem. Your analysis and insights into the chosen topic are presented as your views, which are justified with evidence (theories and recent related findings). This will subsequently lead you to draw up a research framework for the study.

Propose a research framework based on the insights gathered from the reviews and your understandings about the topic.

Structure of the assignment:

Title of your study (not more than 18 words)

Introduction (Introduce the problem context and the need for the study, including the SDGs that will be addressed- 1-to-1.5-page length)

Literature review

Related findings from past studies (Use thematic approach in organising literature review i.e. themes and sub-themes). Ensure that your present review covers the research context (e.g school system, target sample), concepts/constructs/variables involved in the study, and findings related to the interrelationships of the study variables.

Theoretical Framework (Discuss key theories and models that are related to the research problem)

Critical Review leading to the need for the study (Remember that the researcher’s voice should be heard in this section, to justify the need and significance of your study).
批判性评论,说明研究的必要性(请记住,在这一部分应该听到研究者的声音,说明研究的必要性和重要性)。

Research gap (one or a few of the gaps)
研究缺口(一个或几个缺口)

Propose and justify a suitable methodology to investigate the problem.
提出研究问题的适当方法并说明理由。

Conceptual Framework (If you are planning to do a quantitative or mixed method study)
概念框架(如果您计划进行定量或混合方法研究)

Conclusion (not more than 250 words)
结论(不超过 250 字)

Summarise the key points covered in the assignment, emphasis on the need, significance and how the proposed methodology will address the research gap.
总结作业中涉及的要点,强调需求、意义以及所建议的方法将如何解决研究缺口。
