Live from London, this is BBC News. Rory McIlroy finally masters Augusta, completing a career grand slam after a sudden death playoff against England's Justin Rose.
(0:48 - 1:09)
President Trump warns no one is off the hook with the tariffs. The co-creator and Emmy winning star of Upstairs, Downstairs, Jean Marsh, has died at the age of 90. And Katy Perry prepares to blast off with the all-female Blue Origin space mission.
(1:10 - 1:59)
Will it be the realisation of a teenage dream of the singer? Hello and a very warm welcome to the programme. I'm Sally Bundock. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy has won the US Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta in Georgia.
He beat England's Justin Rose in a tense playoff. It's McIlroy's first Masters win and makes him the first European to complete a career grand slam of golf's four major tournaments. For McIlroy, the feat marks a crowning achievement in his career and has delivered his first major title since August of 2014.
(2:05 - 2:37)
So that gives you a taste of the celebrations at Rory McIlroy's home club, Hollywood Golf Club in County Down. Members at the club endured an emotional rollercoaster over five hours with a lot of nail-biting and some were hardly able to watch but the high tension was worth it in the end. What can you say about going into that final goal against Rose? I love Rose, right? But what a playoff, brilliant.
(2:37 - 2:53)
He proved to everyone that any wee boy from Ireland can make history. Well played, Rory. It means everything, especially being up there on the final line.
It means a lot to be in front of the home club and in front of all the supporters from the school as well. It's important to me. It means everything.
(2:54 - 3:17)
Well, let's talk to Tony May, our High Performance Director at Golf Australia. Hello to you, Tony. I mean, in my household, we're all golfers.
We're all glued to the Masters throughout the weekend. What a result. Yes, certainly an incredible result, something that Rory's been knocking on the door for quite a few years and great to see him complete the career grand slam.
(3:17 - 4:02)
Just talk us through how significant this is. The first European to do that. He's now with the greats in golf, isn't he? Yes, absolutely.
I think he's demonstrated over a number of years his ability to be one of the best players in the world, if not the best player in the world and has been for many years now. He's just had many ups and downs through the major championships and there's no question that he's under an extreme amount of pressure when the major championships come around and particularly the Masters with all the expectation. What happened in 2011 to him on that back nine and not being able to get that Masters trophy, I think today was a crowning moment in his career.
(4:03 - 4:24)
Absolutely, 100% the crowning moment in his career. He was well aware of that when you saw him break down after that putt that saw him win the Masters. His first major title though since August 2014, Rory McIlroy fans have been waiting for this moment for a very long time.
(4:25 - 5:16)
Yes, like I said before, he's absolutely had some ups and downs in the majors and he's certainly had some really great opportunities to add to his major tally and I think that just shows how much more significant this title is. I think with all the difficulties he's had closing out majors more recently, I think to be able to do it and he certainly had some challenges today that he overcome and the way he played that playoff was incredible and great to see him get his fifth major title. So what does it take to persevere and push through and not give up? I mean he gave a very moving speech to all of those at Augusta afterwards when he had the green jacket on talking about just how significant it is for him but how much he's going to be telling his daughter about you must never give up.
(5:17 - 6:57)
Oh absolutely, I think you can't underestimate the amount of pressure and stress that he would be under in these major championships and I think also too as a lot of people play golf and the gap between these players and the rest of the world is incredible so I think to win a major championship is hugely challenging but to do it in the circumstances that he's done it in, I think it's a great lesson for everyone to never give up and keep persevering and keep looking at ways to improve and get better and I think he's a great role model for many of the young players to show that it doesn't matter how many times you get knocked down, it's how you continue to show up and I think he's always done that in a really professional way and I think the way he won today is a true credit to him. And many, many years ahead still for Rory McIlroy wouldn't you say? Yeah for sure and I think there's no question that this win will take a bit of pressure off him, I'm sure the rest of the world will be nervous to a rampaging Rory McIlroy but I think it's great for the game to see him performing well and going head to head with Bryson as he did today, I'm sure they'll have many big challenges ahead against one another and I think it's great for the game to see Rory playing well. Indeed it is, thank you so much Tony Mayer there from Golf Australia with reaction to that win and of course do take a look at the BBC News website and the news app for more detail on that amazing win for Rory McIlroy.
(6:57 - 7:17)
Now on to other news. President Zelensky has urged Donald Trump to visit Ukraine to witness the devastation caused by Russia's invasion. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of using cluster munitions to maximise casualties in a ballistic missile attack on the city of Sumy on Sunday.
(7:18 - 8:13)
At least 34 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in this assault. The Ukrainian president told CBS News that before there were any decisions or negotiations with Moscow, President Trump should come and see for himself the devastation happening in Ukraine. You think you understand what's going on here? Okay, we respect your position, you understand, but please, before any kind of decisions, any kind of formats of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children, destroyed or dead, come, look and then let's move with a plan how to finish the war.
(8:14 - 8:29)
You will understand with whom you have a deal. You will understand what Putin did. James Waterhouse there reports now from Sumy on the aftermath of Sunday's attack that killed 34 people.
(8:29 - 8:44)
It is painstaking work that rescue teams are well rehearsed in. This appears to be the epicentre of one of the missile strikes. You can see how the building has been scorched by fire and scarred by shrapnel.
(8:45 - 9:03)
And it doesn't just seem to stop here. If you make your way down, the force generated from these strikes causes much more destruction further afield. You can see destroyed vehicles, twisted metal, and all of the windows here on this neoclassical building have been blown through.
(9:04 - 9:23)
And it's behind this building where the second missile struck in the middle of the morning on a bustling Sunday as people came out to celebrate Easter. And just on the corner here, officials say was a bus at the moment of impact. And it's here where most of the deaths seem to be concentrated.
(9:23 - 9:49)
Sumy is a place that is habitually pounded by Russian forces from across the border. And officials are concerned that Moscow is readying itself for a major offensive in these parts. So for all of the talk of peace, these ceasefire negotiations being led by America with an official visit to Moscow yesterday, the idea of this war pausing in any way for cities like Sumy feels like a very distant prospect.
(9:50 - 10:04)
James Waterhouse there in Sumy for us. Let's bring you some other news now. The Red Cross says a Palestinian medic who's been missing since an Israeli attack in Gaza last month is being detained by Israel.
(10:05 - 10:26)
The Red Cross says it hasn't been granted access to Assad al-Nasra, whose fate had been very unclear until now. The Israeli army has not confirmed the information. UK officials are working to deliver essential raw materials to British Steel's Scunthorpe plant as it races to keep its blast furnaces burning.
(10:27 - 10:45)
An emergency law rushed through Parliament on Saturday gave the government control of the site to prevent its Chinese owner shutting it down. We'll have more on that in business. Striking refuse workers in Birmingham will vote today on what's being called a partial deal to end their months-long dispute with the city council.
(10:46 - 11:06)
There's been no regular bin collection in the city since the 11th of March. Army logistics officers are being brought in to help the council plan emergency collections. Police in the US state of Pennsylvania say a man has been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack on the official home of the state governor Josh Shapiro.
(11:06 - 11:34)
The 38-year-old man faces charges including attempted murder and terrorism. Now President Trump has pushed back on suggestions that Friday's pausing of reciprocal tariffs was letting countries off the hook for their levies on US imports. Just to say right now in Asia the financial markets have started a brand new trading week after what was a tumultuous week last week.
(11:34 - 11:47)

(11:47 - 13:15)
Around the world and across the UK this is BBC News. Now let's head to Ukraine this morning as the country is reeling from fresh attacks in Sumy on Sunday killing some 34 people. President Zelensky is urging President Trump to visit Ukraine to witness for himself the devastation.
(13:16 - 13:30)
I'm joined now by politician Oleksii Goncharenko for more on this. Welcome to BBC News. It has been a very challenging and devastating weekend again for Ukraine.
(13:30 - 13:44)
President Zelensky urging President Trump to come and see for himself. Do you think he would do that? I don't know. But I think it would be great if he would come and really see and understand what's going on.
(13:45 - 14:05)
I think that President Trump already understands that the main and only obstacle to peace is Putin. And Russia doesn't want any peace. And with all their attacks they are just, I don't know, they are kind of humiliating Trump who is speaking every day about peace.
(14:05 - 14:17)
But every day Russia attacks not just military but civilians, killing children. Like yesterday in Sumy 34 people killed including two children. Like almost every day.
(14:17 - 14:28)
And this night in my Odessa, in my native city, there was a drone attack. And one of the drones attacked a hospital. And the hospital is damaged.
(14:28 - 14:40)
And that's happening every day. So I don't know, even me, I feel myself humiliated. But I think President Trump should be felt the same way.
(14:41 - 14:56)
Ukraine's allies, most of them have strongly condemned the attacks that took place on Sunday. For example, in Germany, Friedrich Merz describing it as a war crime. However, President Trump saying it's a horrible thing.
(14:57 - 15:13)
A very different narrative coming from the White House. Are you concerned about how this process is progressing in terms of America's push with Russia to try and get a peace agreement? We don't see for the moment any result. There is no result.
(15:14 - 15:27)
There is no, any ceasefire, not an attack on any infrastructure, not in the Black Sea. So for the moment there is no result. Definitely the talks continue, we see it.
(15:27 - 15:39)
Mr. Whitkoff met just recently with Putin again. But it looks like Russia is just trying to win the time. They are just playing games with Trump.
(15:39 - 15:51)
And the question is when Trump will be completely pissed off and when he will start to put pressure on them. That's the question. Because without pressure on Russia, absolutely nothing will happen.
(15:52 - 16:00)
They don't understand the carrot. They understand only the stick. So if President Trump really wants peace, he needs to use this stick.
(16:01 - 16:20)
Secondary sanctions against Russia, sanctions against their shadow fleet. Now is the moment, because Russian economy is suffering a lot during recent months, and especially now, after all the tariff wars started, oil price dropped. For Russia it's very hard.
(16:20 - 16:49)
So if Trump would add even a little bit of pressure on this industry right now, that would be very, very difficult for Russia to withstand. Alexei Ogoncharenko, thank you for joining us live this morning from Ukraine. Gene Marsh, who co-created Anne Wan and Emmy for starring in the 1970s TV drama Upstairs Downstairs, has died at the age of 90.
(16:50 - 17:21)
The TV series was a huge, critical and popular hit in the 70s and went on to be broadcast in 70 countries. She also co-created the House of Elliot for the BBC in the early 1990s and had a long career in film, television and theatre. Katy Perry has said she received confirmation from the universe that she should take part in the Blue Origin space mission.
(17:21 - 17:49)
The pop star is part of a six-woman crew flying to space on Jeff Bezos's new Shepard NS31 mission, organised by his partner Lauren Sanchez. The trip, launching from West Texas, is expected to last for around 11 minutes. You know, I've always been interested in astrophysics and interested in astronomy and astrology and the stars.
(17:50 - 18:16)
I feel like we are all made of stardust and we all come from the stars and it will be exciting to see them twinkle from that sight and also have such an appreciation for Mother Earth when we see it in that way. A huge star, talking about seeing the stars from another angle. Let's bring in Dr Megan Christian, reserve astronaut and senior exploration manager at the UK Space Agency.
(18:16 - 18:24)
Megan, lovely to see you this morning. This is going to be quite a trip. They're quite a high-profile female group going up to space.
(18:24 - 18:41)
That's right and the interesting thing about this mission is that it's the first time that women will go to space without men since Valentina Tereshkova went into orbit by herself in 1963. So it is a powerful moment of representation. And just talk us through those who are on board.
(18:41 - 18:53)
Obviously we've got Katy Perry there, we've got Jeff Bezos's partner, Lauren Sanchez and there's quite a few others. Yes, there are. They've all got high profiles.
(18:53 - 19:16)
Some of them work in science, some of them in engineering, some of them are journalists, there's an activist on board as well. So they all have quite large audiences and as Katy Perry was talking about just there, they're hoping to get a new kind of perspective on Earth when they look at it from space, which is known as the overview effect. And if they can share that with their audiences, then I think this trip will have been worth it.
(19:16 - 19:38)
And this is all happening later today. Could it be delayed? I mean, is it due to the weather? We saw a recent launch, it was delayed and delayed, wasn't it? It's always possible that something changes often due to weather, maybe due to some small technical difficulty from the ground. So it's possible, but the launch window opens at 2.30pm BST today.
(19:38 - 19:49)
And it's an 11-minute trip. What will they experience? Talk us through it. It is an 11-minute trip, and during that time, they will have about four minutes of weightlessness.
(19:50 - 20:14)
So they'll launch into space, they'll be feeling the effects of additional gravity as they head up there, then suddenly they will be weightless and they'll be able to float around the capsule. They'll probably have those first few seconds of complete joy of being in that weightless environment. Then they'll take a few seconds to experience that and look out the window and see the Earth from space, which will be an incredible experience.
(20:14 - 20:35)
They will pass the Karman Line, that's 100km from the surface of the Earth, and then they'll come back down and be very happy to be reunited with their families, I expect. I am sure, especially after the recent trip by other astronauts that was supposed to be for a few weeks, but lasted a lot longer than that. Let's talk about how important this is for Blue Origin.
(20:35 - 20:46)
Of course, it's got a huge contract with NASA, which is worth over $3 billion, but still Jeff Bezos is having to put a lot of his own money into this. It's a very important PR exercise for him, isn't it?
