This is an idea I have had bouncing around for awhile now. What is Rainbird? 什么是雨鸟?
Operation Rainbird is a contingency plan to provide a functional clandestine communications network in the event of a downed grid system that knocks out more conventional communication infrastructure, such as mobile phones and internet in more than one country. Given that amateur radio is a hobby enjoyed by people all over the world, there is potential infrastructure on every continent, in many neighbourhood’s that could theoretically provide such a communications bridge if only its use could somehow be coordinated. These radio operators would then be in a better position to pass the message along a chain of other Rainbird operators, knowing that there will be great deal of them listening in different parts of the world at the specific times outlined in the schedule. All that would be required of non operator members of Operation Rainbird will be to keep an eye out for potential amateur radio equipment in their area, which is usually identifiable by the large antenna towers in an operator’s back yard. It could be that they have driven past an amateur radio operator’s house a million times and never even realised it. Each member should be aware that as Rainbird utilises open communication channels, there is no way to safeguard any of the information coming through. It should be regarded as an unsecure channel only to be initiated as a last resort for the purpose of urgent message passing to other nations/ states/provinces, as use of these frequencies is generally banned from all except those who have the appropriate licenses in place, and can be met with heavy fines. In other words, Rainbird members vow not to implement Operation Rainbird unless they are certain their conventional communications infrastructure will be down for a prolonged period as this may actually prove to be detrimental to Rainbird’s cause. An example of a real world situation where radio helped in mitigate the confusion surrounding a disaster involving a whole community of people was during the 2019 bushfires of NSW, Australia. Several satellite phones had to be airdropped into the area with instructions for anyone who found them to call a specific headquarters. Although amateur radio came into play during these bushfires, had a system like Rainbird been in place, the coordination of information from people within the disaster zone could have mitigated even more confusion to those viewing events from the outside. In addition to this, many emergency response groups would only be suited for catering to their local community. The determined frequency of Operation Rainbird will be on the HF band of 7Mhz/40 metres. The operational schedule is to coincide with specific phases of the moon. DOMAIN47 is to be used as the common callsign to put a call out for all potential Rainbird Operators that might be listening but not in a position to communicate back. A standard message guiding civilians to a safer location would include something along the lines of "Callout to all Rainbird Operators utilising DOMAIN47 callsign, this is {operator’s callsign}. Whilst Rainbird is aimed at providing an intercontinental communications bridge, it is suggested Rainbird members have their own handheld CB/VHF/UHF radios for local communications. Keeping the equipment in a grounded Faraday cage for storage until needed is one idea, but you would have to be absolutely sure no more nukes are going to be detonated within EMP range of your area. @K-Man you raise some very good points that I agree with and knew about when i wrote the article. However, i decided to leave them out as I figured those it is targeted towards - preppers and survivalists - generally have next to no knowledge of electronics or radio (of course there will be exceptions to this). there is also the catch 22 that if Rainbird participants are actively going out and looking for hams, SHTF has probably already happened and the radio equipment will wither already be toast, or the more steadfast hams will have thought to protect it. The main basis of the idea is for coordination once working equipment and a savvy operator can be found. But yeah, keeping it in an all metal enclosure with an attached ground spike couldn’t hurt. I’ve had some nagging interest in bolstering my personal comms lately. Currently I only have local comms in the form of the Baofeng UV-5R. However, I’ve heard that with the proper antennae configuration, (home made) I can stretch the signal even further. Perhaps tailor the construction to the 7Mhz//407 \mathrm{Mhz} / 40 metres band range? There are a handful of base operators in my immediate area with even more outside of it. Some parts of the Middle East are the same way. There were warnings about this in shortwave guides years ago because the shortwave and ham frequencies overlap. 中东的一些地区也是如此。几年前的短波指南中就有关于这方面的警告,因为短波和业余无线电频率重叠。
