Considering driving to Mazatlan next July from the PNW. I have a Tesla and am curious what the route is like and if anyone that has done it can give some recommendations on: Crossing, charging and any other helpful tips. I’m not sure that the charging network is very robust down there. Is there a supercharger in Mazatlan that I’m missing?

Am I the only person who not only sees teslas on a regular basis, but knows people that own them here? Why are people acting as if they don’t exist, this person has never been here and they don’t know how to look up charging stations? They’re moving here, so I’d bet they have been here previously. OP, I see several in Mazatlan. I would imagine you’d install one at your home as well. Google or use yo...展开

Kathleen Nelms Have you been looking through his garage drawers or what adapters does he have that you know he has? And he can charge an electric car with adapters he must already have .... are you sure about this? If so, that's what I call confidence. Turns out the #1 show stopper for electric vehicle home-charging stations would be that they typically run on 240VAC and no conventional home in Mexico is wired for 240VAC and most will be fed with 120VAC from a 12 gauge wire with 20 amps maximum for the conventional Mexican house. With 7200 watt typical output, that's going to be 7200W/240V and thus our wiring for the charger alone would be 30A on each leg of the 240VAC source for a total of 60A which would mean you'd have to account for other appliances as well and continue to reduce the gauge in order to increase the diameter of the supply cable until you met the new loads that would be experienced with a car- charger added . Additionally if a 7200 watt charger could be found that runs on 120VAC, at 7200 watts that is a 60A load, 3x the capacity of what most houses are wired for. The #2 show stopper once you get everything wired up and go to that expense, plus the expense of get the electric company running another meter from the other leg of the 240VAC, that means you will quickly go over the subsidized Kw hr rate which will increase your price per Kw hour substantially due to the graduated power price climb.

Don Phillipe you haven’t really done yoir research have you? An ADAPTER allowed the charger plug to adapt to a different outlet/poser source. Many EVs come with. Blah blah blah I ignore half of your superfluous drivel And I actually know people who do this. Here. In Mexico. You are assuming he’s an idiot has no clue and can’t do this. We are not the same

Kathleen Nelms I see ... you are not only an EE, you can read my mind. Some of us just can't stand up to your intellect, I get it. The markings of a true genius we have here, at last it's clear ;-).

The problem you are going to have is a lack of superchargers. There are level 2 chargers, but you’re going to have to charge for 6 hours. There’s 1 supercharger in Sonora, and one in mazatlan, with a desert of chademo and j1772 in between.

Good luck with that. Very impractical in Mexico traveling. They are fine around town, but I would never travel any distance in one.

Kathleen Nelms I hear people complaining about driving them cross country in the US, all the time. How difficult it is and the time it takes. And Mexico is years behind in charging stations. They are not an efficient way to travel. But to each their own.

David Faulkner you can flat bed them in. I didn’t see anyone mention that. Cross. TIP. Flatbed. I’m just mentioning. You live four blocks from me. I know you have to see them locally. They’re charging somewhere.

Kathleen Nelms Yes, I see them all the time. And I shake my head and laugh every time. Yes, they are charging at their homes.

Not on these highways and topes! Swiss cheese will tear it apart! Those already here were likely transported or imported by flatbed as I've seen several with Mexico plates but driving is definitely a challenge and very very slow!

I'd advise against it due to concerns about charging infrastructure and potential repair issues, which would be handled in Brownsville, TX.

And... what is the road clearance on a Tesla? I had a Toyota Matrix many years ago with 5" 1/2" clearance and you really should never drive the libres (non-toll) roads because the thousands of "topes" speedbumps will damage you car.

Kip Wylie I’ve bottomed out in a 7+ inch clearance Ford Explorer. You can’t choose a car based on topes.

In Patzcuaro the only way I could get to our rental was to cross the topes at a 45 degree angle, one wheel at a time. Even then I'd scrape.

Airlines or bus travel will allow you to better enjoy the trip. With all the challenges of a new journey into a cartel-controlled unfamiliar country, why add the additional worry of where you are going to be parking your car or where you are going to find fuel? If there were recharge stations every 10K, we'd still have to ask who would want to bring an expensive auto into Mexico and what would there be to gain from it?
