Recommendation letter material collection form
RL is the evidence of the personal statement (PS) through the mouth of others. PS and RL together form a "three-dimensional" support for the applicant. RL is an important part of the document and needs to be taken seriously. One or two of the recommenders should be the applicant's teachers, tutors, department heads or school leaders. Applicants who are already working should ask your supervisor to write a recommendation letter. If you can find an academic authority in the relevant professional field or an internationally renowned professor (such as someone who has published many academic papers in international journals) to serve as a recommender, it will be helpful to the application. The status of the recommender should never be forced, because if the recommender does not know you, even if he/she writes a recommendation letter, it will not convince the review committee of the other school. The recommender must have some contact with the applicant. He/she can recommend the applicant from various aspects such as academic performance, scientific research ability and potential, personality, expertise, language ability, etc. Each recommender should only comment on the aspects that he/she has contact with the applicant, and cannot cover everything.
Before using this form, please be familiar with the recommendation letter writing process and precautions :
General recommendation letter writing process: students discuss with teachers to determine the candidate list of recommenders → students communicate with the candidates to obtain their consent → students fill out Chinese materials, teachers write English recommendation letters → students give them to the recommender for review → students print the recommendation letter on company letterhead, ask the recommender to sign and write the date by hand, and scan the electronic version and send it to the teacher.
If the recommender requires the student to write and promote the application online, the student only needs to provide the recommender's basic information and does not need to provide writing materials.
Recommender selection criteria: a. Must have academic contact with the applicant (related to the graduate program), the longer the better. The so-called academic contact is either the teacher of the professional course or the instructor of your professional project or competition. In addition, you must have excellent performance in these academic contacts (high GPA or competition awards), so that the teacher has a reason to recommend. b. Under the premise of meeting the first condition, the higher the title of the recommender, the better. For example, professor>associate professor (assistant professor)>lecturer.
Note: For example, internationally renowned scholars and professors, the president of an internationally renowned company, or even an old friend of the other party's admissions officer or professor. If the applicant is an ordinary student or ordinary employee and chooses a high-ranking recommender (such as a school principal), you should explain clearly how the recommender got to know the applicant. At the same time, the relationship between the recommender and the applicant should be clearly introduced in the first paragraph.
Recommender combination: academic + professional, that is, academic and work (internship). The United States recommends two academic + one internship, and the United Kingdom and Hong Kong recommend two academic recommendation letters.
The core of the recommendation letter :
Teacher recommendation letters should be closely related to the applicant's academic performance and academic ability, and should be combined with the applied major. If you are applying for a management course, do not use a lot of space to describe the results of a minor in computer science, and vice versa; employer recommendation letters should be related to the applicant's work performance and the ability they have demonstrated during work. But they should be combined with the applied major. If you are applying for a technical course, do not emphasize your communication and organizational skills too much, and vice versa. In short, be detailed and concise.
When recommending the applicant's strengths, avoid generalities. It is best to attach specific examples, and of course data support is more convincing. For example: ranking 10/200 (top 10 out of 200), how many days it took to complete the experiment, and what the success rate is. In addition: if the recommending teacher is a thesis or graduation project instructor, you can mention the general situation of the thesis or graduation project to illustrate the research or practical ability of the recommendee.
Useful supplements to recommendation letters : The applicant's other strengths, such as team spirit, cheerful personality, quality, and dedication to scientific research can also be briefly mentioned as supplementary content; the applicant's other abilities, such as personality, quality and other abilities can also be mentioned as supplementary content, but should not take up too much space.
Length of recommendation letter : Generally, the English manuscript is about 300-400 words.
There are two major mistakes in writing recommendation letters : writing like a Chinese teacher's comments to students, which is applicable to everyone. Being too comprehensive and inappropriate in details is also not advisable. The evaluation is too exaggerated, as if the applicant's current level does not need any further training, or the excessive praise of the applicant greatly reduces the level and level of the recommender.
In order to allow recommenders to cooperate more efficiently with our online recommendation letter promotion work, after students and consultants have determined the time for online application, for example, we plan to start the online application work in a certain month (try to fill in the recommender information and submit the online application in a certain week of the month, and the recommender can forward the invitation emails sent by the school to the students in a relatively centralized manner), then students can remind the recommender in advance to check the emails regularly and forward them in time that month.
