The plan view of a three-storey building is given in Figure 1. Both the exterior and interior beams are assumed to be 300mm wide and 750 mm height. Both the exterior columns (placed along the perimeter of the building) and the interior columns have a rectangular section with a minimum dimension of 250mm, respectively. The concrete strength is 40MPa, and the reinforcement strength is 500MPa. Assume a superimposed dead load of 5 kpa to account for floor covering, the ceiling and mechanical equipment. In consultation with the architect and owner, it has been decided that the floor will be designed for a live load of 5kpa, including partitions. This has been done to allow flexibility in office layouts.
