Chapter Text 正文
The trek to Luxian, the nearby town, was not too far but Ichika knew that many nobles were not used to it, often taking carriages everywhere. Ichika’s family was not rich enough to own one outright so they only rented during long journeys (or the royal family would send one to attend their parties and gatherings) so walking everywhere was not necessarily new to him.
It was an easy walk at least. They made the pathway easy from the academy to the town. It was good for a relaxing stroll.
“They could at least let us take the horses out once in a while.” Rin said as he glanced around. It was mainly trees with the town in the distance. “It’s such a waste of time needing to walk to the town and back.”
“Just think of it as getting some exercise.” Ichika said as he nudged Rin’s shoulder. “If you’re planning on being a knight, there will be times when you don’t have a horse and will be forced to walk on your own. It would be a shame if you get tired from just a bit of walking.”
“I get plenty of exercise and my endurance is more than enough to handle just
walking.”
Rin responded indignantly, Ichika noticing a cute pout on his face. “Aren’t
you
tired?”
“No. Why would I be? I train too.” Ichika pointed out and Rin was aware of this. After all, they often trained in sword fighting together at the academy.
“Well, if you’re tired, we can’t get a carriage or horse back so I’ll have to carry you.” Rin said, a light blush on his cheeks. “It would look convincing to everyone…”
“Are you calling me weak?!”
“What?! How did you get
that
from what I said?!”
Luxian was bustling with locals shopping, working, or having excursions since it was the weekend. Students that left earlier were also there, enjoying their day out. Some recognized Rin and Ichika, turning away to whisper as they passed by which made Ichika feel a bit awkward.
“Stay close.” Rin said as he grabbed his hand. He didn’t look directly at Ichika, keeping his eyes forward. “After all, we’re supposed to be on a date.”
This was an awaited ‘date’ they had planned in order to look like a ‘real’ couple. After all, Rin did his proposal in front of everyone so they had to be convincing. Theoretically, Ichika had an idea of what a couple was supposed to act like but even in his memories of his life before this novel…
He never had a girlfriend.
In his sad life before, he was single for the entirety of it. Romance was only a small part of the media he consumed, a fantasy that could never happen to him. He didn’t even have his first kiss! Not even a childhood one some kids might have with their crushes!
No one
had a crush on him!
He was completely clueless to
actual
dating. He didn’t even read any romance novels, preferring more action and adventure, so even if there was a love interest, it’s not like the main focus was on the protagonist and them becoming a couple.
His knowledge was minimal. And he knew that Rin’s was probably worse than his, especially since he rejected potential fiancées left and right.
How were they going to make their date convincing if both of them were clueless?!
They entered the cafe they frequented and were instantly greeted by the staff. They managed to find a seat and took a look at the menu even though they both knew everything there already.
“When you’re on a date, you should go out for a meal and enjoy each other’s company.” Rin explained quietly, placing the menu upright on the table, blocking his face as he talked to Ichika.
Ichika followed the action, placing the menu up. He also spoke quietly. “Okay, but we always do this so it’s not really a date, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“Like…this is normal for us and that was before we were ‘engaged’. This isn’t really a ‘date’ for us.”
Rin frowned, his eyebrows furrowing at the same time as he contemplated his words. Ichika laughed, gently poking in between them.
“Relax.” Ichika said as he lowered the menu. He raised a hand for the waiter. “Do you know what you want?”
“Yeah.”
They ordered their food and it wasn’t long after that it was served, probably putting all their focus on their order to give Rin the best service. Ichika felt a little embarrassed, knowing that they had entered later than some of the other customers, but it was a normal occurance whenever he was out with Rin.
As they ate, they began to chat, the topic of their conversation being about the school festival in a few months. Although their class was organizing an event, because Ichika was in the magic class, he had to do something with them too.
…even though Meguru had been absent for so long!
“I feel so much pressure.” Ichika began, eyes going wide as he stared at his food. “Where is Meguru? What if he doesn’t make it back in time? Do…do I have to do everything on my own when the time comes? I’m not skilled enough for that!”
“Then get better.” Rin stated bluntly and Ichika knew there was no malice in his voice when he said that. He still felt annoyed.
“It’s like asking you to face a dragon at your current level.” Ichika reasoned, trying to get Rin to see the issue with the skill level.
“I'd be completely fine though?” Rin replied with such an unnecessary amount of confidence. Ichika was highly aware of his skill and knew he had been working on his aura, but he still doubted Rin, at his current level, could take out a
dragon.
“Rin, you’ve never even fought a monster. How can you say you’re fine against a dragon?”
“Because I’m the best.”
Ichika shook his head, knowing he couldn’t convince him at this rate.
“You say that but you haven’t beaten Rensuke in the last few years.”
“Y-You haven’t either!”
Ichika laughed at his flustered expression. He knew it was a bit of a sore spot for him considering Rensuke had grown in height and in muscle since entering the Military Academy. Although Rin had also developed in muscle and height, he was not at Rensuke’s level.
And Ichika was far from it too, which upset him even more.
“Lighten up.” Ichika said as she reached over for his napkin and wiped away the bit of sauce on Rin’s cheek from his food. “Aren’t you your father’s son? Remember, he was the youngest commander in history. You definitely inherited his skills.”
“O-Of course!” Rin squeaked, recoiling and grabbing Ichika’s wrist. Ichika thought that he was offended that he was treating him like a kid again but Rin didn’t say anything nor did he release his wrist.
Strange.
They came out of the cafe after finishing up. Nothing about eating at the cafe screamed ‘date’ for him so he was a bit perplexed by Rin’s plan. He followed Rin as they walked through the town.
“I heard girls like to go shopping.” Rin stated as they made their way down a street full of shops. He held out his hand, making a circle with his thumb and pointer. “I’ll pay for everything.”
“Eh? Why?”
“Because that’s the right way to do it.”
Ichika stared in confusion. Rin knew just as much as him that he didn’t really like shopping in the first place, especially when they were on a street filled with women’s clothing. And if he did buy something for himself, he always paid with the tiny allowance he had.
“It’s fine. You paid for lunch.” Ichika said. “I should pay for you next. But you have to be reasonable.”
“Eh? The guy is supposed to pay for the girl on a date…”
I’m not a girl!
Ichika wanted to yell but refrained from doing so.
“But that doesn’t seem fair, right?” He didn’t want to be in debt to Rin. “Both of us are trying to have fun together. Why should only one carry the financial burden when we can keep it even? We should be equal in that sense.”
“I mean, I don’t mind. I have the money.”
‘Goddamn prince.’ Ichika silently cursed at him.
“Let’s say I’m buying a gift for you as a thanks.” Ichika suggested. He grinned cheekily. “Not a sword though.”
“Come on! When will I get my sword?!” Rin complained as he grabbed Ichika’s hand. They continued walking down the street, not paying attention to the shops around them. “Even grandfather says I shouldn’t get one yet…”
“Rin, you’re fourteen.”
“And a swordsmanship prodigy!” He added with a scowl. “That means I can handle a real sword. It’s easy enough.”
Ichika stared. “Didn’t you cut yourself the first time you used a real one?”
Ichika
“I-I did not.”
“I remember it. Everyone made such a fuss about it.”
“That wasn’t from the sword! I just…accidentally cut myself.”
“On what?”
“…the…the…the rock!” “…那…那个…
“We were on the training grounds. There weren’t any rocks.”
Rin kept
insisting
that he was perfectly fine with a sword but Ichika knew him. He knew how excited he was when he first got his hands on a real one, remembering how his eyes sparkled and immediately wanted to try it out. The memories of him trying to be strong when he accidentally cut himself and the panic of everyone around him made his chest hurt a little but seeing as how he was currently arguing against it amused him.
“No real sword until you’re older!” Ichika said with a click of his tongue, preparing to scold him again. “And you can’t own a real sword until you reach knighthood or you get permission from the king anyways.”
“But Rensuke—” 「
“He gets to use it because he’s in the Military Academy and it’s part of their training, approved by your grandfather.” Ichika reminded him. Rin deflated at that.
“I should’ve gone to the Military Academy instead.” He muttered. Ichika laughed and elbowed him.
“Nope! Forced into the Royal Academy like me, so we’re stuck together!”
Rin stayed quiet at that but Ichika did feel him hold his hand tighter.
Shopping was neglected as neither had any interest in anything there. They just wandered around, and chatted, reminiscing about past memories, discussing what kind of swords they wanted when they became knights, and figuring out a plan to take Rensuke down during their break.
It was just a normal outing for them.
“We’re supposed to be on a date!” Rin suddenly realized when they sat on a bench in the town square. “We haven’t done anything date related and it’s almost time to head back!”
“It’s fine.” Ichika said as he yawned. He placed his head on Rin’s shoulder, feeling tired from just walking around and chatting. He didn’t realize how much time had passed.
He also didn’t realize how, even though it was just the two of them talking about nothing all day, he didn’t get to tell him about his plan for after the academy. He knew he should tell him soon enough because they talked about their future knighthood…and Ichika had to delay that.
Rensuke would be a knight by the time they entered as squires and they wanted to do the training together. Ichika didn’t know how long it would take to improve his magic since he was already so slow. It could take him years and years and by that time, one of them could be the new commander.
He should tell Rin.
He
needed
to tell Rin.
Yet, he didn’t want to break this relaxed atmosphere. Simply leaning against Rin’s shoulder like that made him want to stop time, resisting ruining the moment. He knew that Rin would react strongly to it and would be upset but just feeling how Rin’s arm curled up on his back, hand in his hair, playing with the ribbon that he had given him years ago, he didn’t want to say anything to disrupt it.
“We have to go on another date.” Rin said quietly but determinedly. Ichika peered up at his face, cheeks flushed pink. “Because this one was such a failure, we need to try again so we can look more convincing.”
Ichika had to remind him that their engagement was to be broken (whenever Rin got to that damn letter to his grandfather – hopefully before he came to the school festival). The fake dating could only go on until his grandfather got him to meet more potential fiancées.
But that was trouble for another day.
For now, Ichika would just let this moment pass.
The tavern was old and dusty, falling beyond repair, and the last place Meguru would ever expect to see any nobles in. There were few people in there, many hooded so their faces were hidden in the shadows, lurking in the corners with their backs against the wall as if afraid someone would come up from behind.
Meguru was often considered fearless and, according to Ego, stupid at times. He admitted he was carefree in many ways, wandering around wherever he wanted whenever he was free, and sometimes running into trouble when he didn’t expect it.
But this place creeped him out.
As a cat, he couldn’t even follow in the tavern. When he was spotted, he was immediately shooed away with a broom by the tavern keeper. He didn’t really want to step into such a place, fearing what would happen if he was caught.
“Monster.” Meguru called out and against the wall, the shadowy figure appeared. “Go.”
Monster did what it was told and seeped between the gap under the door as Meguru remained safe outside, concentrating on Monster’s surroundings. Although the nobles were harmless, there was something unnerving about this hooded figure they picked up. Usually, Meguru would be unfazed or aware of the dangers of people because he could sense their magic level. Most humans had very little unless they were studying to be mages. There were occasions when he could sense a large amount of potential but they were often raw, unpracticed, and usually in children who didn’t know any better. This figure was different.
Meguru couldn’t sense any magic on him.
He didn’t even sense any divinity. It was vastly different from Ichika who had a balance of both but to have
none?
Something was wrong.
“You didn’t just call for me out of nowhere. No one does.” The hooded figure the nobles called out for said. “If you’re asking for me, then I assume you know my terms.”
“Of course,” The leader of the two nobles said with a huff. “The payment is more than sufficient. It has to be if you’re as good as people claim you are.”
The hooded figure snorted. “So what do you want? This better be worth my time.”
“The location is the Royal Academy.” Meguru’s ears perked up at that. He slowly got up from his spot to creep a little closer to the door, curiosity brimming.
“The academy?” The figure questioned, voice indicating no amusement. “Do you know the security of that place? Even more so since the little princes are there. And there’s a mage too. You’ve gotta be insane if you want me to step foot in there.”
“In the next few months, they’ll be preparing for the school festival.” The noble explained. “They will have a day for the public and that would be the best chance.”
“That’s even worse. The academy is filled with nobles’ kids so there would be even more security.”
“Then, isn’t it better to blend in?” The noble proposed. “Aren’t you a master of such things?”
The hooded figure was silent as if contemplating the situation. “This isn’t something I can accept easily. The risks are too high.”
“I see.” The noble said. He took out a bag and threw it on the table, the familiar sound of coins causing others around them to look. “Paid in advance.”
“Hoo?” The hooded figure sat up straight and opened it up, taking one of the gold coins. He held it in his hand, clenching it silently as if he was using magic. “Seems fine.”
But he didn’t know magic…right? But how else could Meguru explain it?
Yet he didn't feel anything again.
“Then, the details—” “那么,具体细节——”
“Wait.”
Meguru felt a chill go down his spine, the hooded figure’s voice resounding in his bones. Instantly, he made Monster retreat, rushing him out of the tavern and immediately running as fast as he could away from the building.
He had no idea what was about to happen but he could sense the threat in his voice, and could see his eyes on Monster even though he was supposed to blend into the shadows of the room. Meguru knew that it was wrong if he could see it.
He didn’t have all the information as they didn’t move onto the main details but he knew that whatever they intended to do would be happening at the school festival in a few months. Meguru had to get back so he could tell Ego and they could prepare—
He felt something grab onto his back legs and he fell, rolling on the ground before abruptly stopping as if something was in the way. He slowly stood back up but he could sense magic surrounding him. He saw a faint glow and when he tried to pass through, he was unable to.
Closing his eyes, he tried to break the barrier but he couldn’t.
He was trapped.
