Look at the examples of the Samaritans, Saul of Tarsus, Cornelius, and the Corinthians, drawing strength to overcome obstacles and achieve the goal of baptism.

1. What reasons make you want to get baptized?

Jehovah has given you many wonderful gifts, including your life. Doesn’t this make you love him deeply and want to express your love for him? The best way to show your love for Jehovah is to dedicate yourself to him and get baptized. By doing so, you will become a member of Jehovah’s family. You will belong to him, and he will be your loving Father and faithful friend. He will always guide you and care for you. (Psalm 73:24; Isaiah 43:1, 2) Additionally, after dedicating yourself and getting baptized, you will have the hope of enjoying everlasting life. (1 Peter 3:21)

2. What will this lesson discuss?

2 However, are there some reasons why you haven’t yet made the decision to get baptized? In fact, many people have had doubts, but later they made changes in their actions and thoughts to qualify for baptism. Now they are zealously worshiping Jehovah with great joy. This lesson will discuss how some people in the 1st century overcame obstacles to get baptized and what we can learn from them.

The Samaritans were baptized

3. What obstacles did some Samaritans need to overcome in order to qualify for baptism?

3 The Samaritans were followers of a religious sect during Jesus' time, primarily residing in the regions of Shechem and Samaria north of Judea. They only accepted the first five books of the Bible (Genesis to Deuteronomy) and possibly the Book of Joshua, believing these were the only scriptures divinely inspired. To qualify for baptism, the Samaritans needed a more comprehensive understanding of God's word. They were aware of God's promise in Deuteronomy 18:18,19 and thus awaited the Messiah's arrival (John 4:25). However, they also needed to accept the fact that Jesus was the Messiah sent by God. Later, many among them did so (John 4:39). Beyond gaining a fuller knowledge of God's word, the Samaritans might also have had to overcome deep-seated prejudices against the Jews (Luke 9:52-54).

4. According to Acts 8:5,6,14, how did some Samaritans respond to the message preached by Philip?

How did the Samaritans overcome obstacles to get baptized? After hearing the evangelist Philip "preach Christ," some Samaritans "accepted the word of God." (Read Acts 8:5,6,14) They did not refuse to listen to him because Philip was a Jew. Perhaps they recalled passages in the Pentateuch stating that God is impartial. (Deuteronomy 10:17-19) In any case, the Samaritans "paid close attention to Philip" as he preached about Christ. At that time, Philip also performed many miracles, including healing the sick and expelling demons. (Acts 8:7) Seeing these clear proofs, the Samaritans acknowledged that Philip had God's backing.

5. What can you learn from the Samaritans?

5 The Samaritans could have found reasons to reject Philip's message. For example, Philip was a Jew, and the message he preached was something they had never heard before. However, the Samaritans did not let these factors become stumbling blocks. Recognizing that Philip taught the truth, they took action without hesitation. The Bible says, "When they believed Philip, who was declaring the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized." (Acts 8:12) What about you? Are you convinced that God's word is the truth? Do you see that Jehovah's Witnesses overcome prejudice and strive to treat one another with love, proving to be true Christians? (John 13:35) Then do not hesitate—take action and get baptized! Trust that Jehovah will surely bless you.

6. What can you learn from Reuben's experience?

Reuben lives in Germany and grew up in a Jehovah's Witness family, but as a young man, he once doubted Jehovah's existence. How did Reuben overcome his doubts? Realizing he needed more evidence, he decided to conduct research. He said, "I needed to do personal study to address my doubts, so I repeatedly examined information about evolution." After studying the book "Is There a Creator Who Cares About You?", he was deeply moved and thought, "Wow! Jehovah truly exists!" Later, when Reuben visited the world headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses and saw the unity of this international organization, he felt it was truly a miracle and grew to love the organization even more. Shortly after returning to Germany, Reuben got baptized at the age of 17. If you have doubts about what you've learned, face them directly and make good use of the organization's publications for personal study. When you "accurately know" the truth, you will surely overcome your doubts. (Ephesians 4:13,14) Additionally, hearing about the unity and love among Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide and seeing the close-knit fellowship in your congregation will deepen your love for this community.

Saul of Tarsus got baptized

7. What change in thinking did Saul need to make?

7 Saul of Tarsus was well-educated, proficient in Jewish law and traditions, and had a promising future in Jewish society. (Galatians 1:13,14; Philippians 3:5) At that time, many Jews viewed Christians as apostates, and Saul was no exception. He fiercely persecuted Christians, believing he was carrying out God's will. (Acts 8:3; 9:1,2; 26:9-11) For Saul, believing in Jesus and getting baptized as his disciple meant willingly becoming a target of persecution by his own people.

8. (A) Why was Saul able to change and get baptized? (B) According to Acts 22:12-16, how did Ananias help Saul? (See also picture)

8 How did Saul overcome obstacles to get baptized? After the ascended Lord Jesus appeared to Saul, he became blind. (Acts 9:3-9) For three days, he fasted and undoubtedly reflected deeply on what had happened to him. This convinced him that Jesus was the Messiah and that His followers were practicing true worship. Saul must also have thought about his previous involvement in Stephen’s death, feeling remorse and sorrow. (Acts 22:20) After three days, Jesus’ disciple Ananias came to help Saul, restoring his sight and encouraging him to get baptized without delay. (Read Acts 22:12-16) Humbly accepting this help, Saul embarked on a completely different path in life. (Acts 9:17,18)

Would you, like Saul, accept help and get baptized? (See paragraph 8)

9. What do you learn from Saul?

9 We can learn much from Saul. A proud attitude and fear of people could have been stumbling blocks on Saul's path to baptism, but he did not let these factors hinder his progress. After understanding the truth about Christ, Saul humbly accepted it and completely transformed himself. (Acts 26:14,19) He knew that following Jesus would mean facing persecution, yet he resolutely chose to become a Christian. (Acts 9:15,16; 20:22,23) After baptism, Saul continued to rely on Jehovah's help to overcome one challenge after another. (2 Corinthians 4:7-10) After your baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, you too may encounter various difficulties, including tests of faith. But rest assured, you are not alone! Jehovah God and Jesus Christ will surely be by your side, supporting you all the way. (Philippians 4:13)

10. What do you learn from Anna's experience?

10 Anna grew up in a Kurdish family in Eastern Europe. After her mother was baptized, Anna began studying the Bible with her father's permission when she was 9 years old. This decision brought her many challenges. Why? Anna's family lived with relatives who believed that abandoning the ancestral faith would bring shame upon the entire family. At age 12, Anna strongly desired baptism and asked her father for permission. He asked whether she truly wanted it herself or if someone was pressuring her. She replied, "Because I love Jehovah very much!" Her father then allowed her to be baptized. After baptism, Anna faced mockery, insults, and bullying from relatives. Her grandfather even said, "It would be better for you to smoke and hang out with bad company than to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses!" How did Anna cope? She said, "Jehovah helped me stay strong, and my parents supported me." Anna kept a record of every time she felt Jehovah's help and often revisited these notes so she wouldn't forget how Jehovah had extended his hand to her. If you fear persecution, remember that Jehovah will surely help you too. (Hebrews 13:6)

Cornelius was baptized

11. What might have hindered Cornelius from getting baptized?

11 Next, let’s consider the example of Cornelius. The Bible says he was an “army officer,” a centurion in the Roman army who commanded about 100 soldiers. (Acts 10:1 and the Insight on the Scriptures note: “Army officer.”) Thus, he likely held significant influence both in the military and in society. The Bible also states that he was “a devout man” who “gave many gifts of mercy to the poor.” (Acts 10:2) Later, Jehovah sent the apostle Peter to preach the good news to Cornelius. Did Cornelius hesitate or resist getting baptized because of his social status?

12. How did Cornelius overcome obstacles to get baptized?

12 How did Cornelius overcome obstacles to get baptized? The Bible says that Cornelius and his entire household “feared God,” and he regularly prayed earnestly to Him. (Acts 10:2) After Peter preached the good news to him, Cornelius and his household accepted Christ and were baptized without delay. (Acts 10:47, 48) Cornelius must have been willing to make any necessary adjustments to worship Jehovah together with his family. (Joshua 24:15; Acts 10:24, 33)

13. What can you learn from Cornelius?

13 Like Saul, Cornelius held a high social status. But he didn’t use this as an excuse to think he couldn’t become a Christian. What about you? Do you need to make significant changes to qualify for baptism? Don’t worry—Jehovah will surely help you! If you are determined to worship Jehovah and live by Bible standards, he will bless you.

14. What can you learn from the experience of Fujii Tsuyoshi?

14 Fujii Tsuyoshi is a Japanese brother. Initially, to achieve his goal of baptism, he needed to make adjustments at work. At the time, he was the assistant principal of the Ikenobo flower arrangement school. The principal was sometimes invited to arrange flowers for funerals and participate in Buddhist ceremonies. If the principal couldn’t attend, Fujii Tsuyoshi would represent him and take part in the Buddhist rituals. Later, Fujii Tsuyoshi learned the truth about death and realized that participating in Buddhist ceremonies would hinder his baptism. (2 Corinthians 6:15, 16) Determined to resolve this issue, he explained his thoughts to the principal. The result? The principal said he no longer needed to participate in any religious ceremonies and could continue working at the school without concern. Fujii Tsuyoshi was baptized after studying the Bible for about a year. If you need to make work adjustments to gain Jehovah’s approval, rest assured—he will take care of you and your family’s needs. (Psalm 127:2; Matthew 6:33)

The Corinthians were baptized

15. What obstacles did the Corinthians have to overcome to be baptized?

15. The ancient city of Corinth was steeped in a materialistic spirit, filled with all kinds of immorality, and many in the city pursued lifestyles condemned by God. In such an environment, making a change to begin worshiping God was certainly no easy task. However, many Corinthians, upon hearing the good news preached by the apostle Paul, "believed and were baptized." (Acts 18:7-11) Later, the Lord Jesus said to Paul in a vision, "I have many people in this city." So Paul stayed there for a year and a half, continuing to preach to the people.

16. How did some Corinthians overcome obstacles to be baptized? (2 Corinthians 10:4,5)

16 How did the Corinthians overcome obstacles to get baptized? (Read 2 Corinthians 10:4,5) With the help of God's word and the mighty power of the holy spirit, the Corinthians transformed their hearts and made significant changes in their lives. (Hebrews 4:12) After accepting the good news about Christ, they gained the strength to abandon vices such as drunkenness, theft, and homosexual acts. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

17. What can you learn from the Corinthians?

17 Notice that although some Corinthians had to overcome deeply ingrained bad habits, they did not conclude that it was impossible for them to become Christians. They persevered in their efforts to walk the narrow road leading to everlasting life. (Matthew 7:13,14) What about you? Are you struggling with a certain bad habit to reach the goal of baptism? Do not give up! Pray to Jehovah to give you holy spirit to help you resist improper desires.

18. What did you learn from Monica's experience?

18 Monica lives in Georgia. To qualify for baptism, she worked hard to make changes, abandoning inappropriate speech and ceasing exposure to harmful entertainment. She said, 'During that time, prayer gave me great strength. Jehovah knew I really wanted to do what was right, and he continued to help and guide me.' Monica was baptized at the age of 16. What about you? To gain Jehovah's approval, do you also need to give up certain bad habits? Keep asking Jehovah for help—he will surely give you abundant holy spirit to enable you to make changes! (John 3:34)

Your faith can move mountains

19. What can help you overcome mountain-like obstacles? (See also picture)

19 Please believe that Jehovah loves you deeply and truly wants you to join his family. No matter what obstacles you encounter on the path to baptism, never doubt this! Jesus once told a group of disciples, 'If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.' (Matthew 17:20) Those present had only followed Jesus for a few years, so their faith still needed strengthening. But Jesus assured them that if they cultivated sufficient faith, Jehovah would help them remove even mountain-like obstacles. Jehovah will certainly do the same for you.

Please believe that Jehovah loves you very much and sincerely hopes you will join his big family (see paragraph 19).

20. This lesson discusses the experiences of some Christians in ancient and modern times. What encouragement do you draw from them?

20 If you find that certain issues are hindering you from getting baptized, take decisive action to overcome these obstacles. You can reflect on the examples of some Christians from both ancient and modern times. May you find comfort and strength in their experiences, and resolve to dedicate yourself to Jehovah and get baptized. This will be the wisest decision of your life!
