Dear Bethel Family of God,

This past week, our nation elected a new government, with Mark Carney as Prime Minister. While many Christians may feel discouraged by the results, we are reminded of our Lord’s words, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). Our hope does not rest in earthly powers. Jesus warned us that in this world we will have trouble, but he also promised, “Take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). We continue to pray that we may lead peaceful and quiet lives, marked by godliness and dignity (1 Tim 2:2). As we receive this new government from God’s hand (Rom 13:1), may our lives reflect trust in Christ and bring glory to his name.

This week, the consistory announces two withdrawals from our congregation. Vincent Deng, who has lived far from the church for some time, found regular attendance difficult. Since marrying last year, he has been worshiping with his wife at a Baptist church in Milton for practical reasons. Jeff and Frances Watt have also requested to withdraw and are now attending the Toronto Free Presbyterian Church, a congregation within the historic Reformed and Presbyterian tradition.

As you read this, I want to encourage each of you: hold fast to the Reformed faith taught and practiced here. Live out your salvation humbly, prayerfully, and with reverent fear where God has placed you. There is great growth and blessing found in faithfully walking together. Love Bethel, Christ’s beloved bride. Guard your heart against discontent or frustration, and trust that God uses all things - including changes and challenges - to refine us as we walk together in fellowship with him and with one another.

This week, delegates from the Canadian Reformed Churches will gather for the tri-annual Synod in Aldergrove, British Columbia. Our elder, Gerald Boot, will be one of the twenty-four delegates entrusted with the important task of prayerfully working through the agenda submitted by the churches. For those interested, regular press releases will likely be posted at canrc.org. Please remember this gathering in your daily prayers. Many significant matters will be discussed that may impact the life of our local church and our federation more broadly.

My brother, Rev. Johan Bruintjes, will also be attending Synod as a fraternal delegate on behalf of the Free Reformed Churches of South Africa. This Sunday afternoon, we will have the privilege of welcoming him to bring us God’s Word as he introduces our next Catechism series, focusing on prayer. In the morning service, we continue our new sermon series on the First Letter of John, where we will explore the reality of fellowship with God and consider how that fellowship is tested and revealed.
