Jiran Niu is a Instructor in Music at Duke Kunshan University, specializing in symphony orchestra conducting, piano, and percussion. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and a Master ’s degree in Conducting from Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Jiran Niu 是 昆山杜克大学的音乐讲师,专攻交响乐团指挥、钢琴和打击乐。他拥有上海财经大学经济学学士学位和上海音乐学院指挥硕士学位。

Awarded the Absolute First Prize at the 2024 Vivaldi Conducting Competition, he has collaborated with orchestras such as Wuxi Symphony Orchestra and Macao Chinese Orchestra, and has been featured in the Shanghai Conservatory’s “Future Conductors” series. He has performed globally at festivals including Lucerne Festival (Switzerland) and Brevard Music Festival (USA), and served as Mainland China Coordinator for the Asian Youth Orchestra.
他曾获2024年维瓦尔第指挥比赛第一名,曾与无锡交响乐团、澳门中乐团等乐团合作,并入选上海音乐学院的“未来指挥家”系列。他曾在瑞士琉森音乐节和美国布里瓦德音乐节等全球音乐节上演出,并担任亚洲青年管弦乐团的中国大陆协调员。

From 2021–2024, he worked with Wuxi Traditional Orchestra and Wuxi Symphony Orchestra, contributing to cultural exchanges in the UK and Japan. He also mentors student orchestras, leading groups like Shanghai Datong High School Symphony Orchestra and Suzhou Lida Middle School Symphony Orchestra to accolades in national arts events.

What is this course about?

Why do musicians come together in an orchestra? How does collaborative rehearsal shape musical interpretation? What techniques bring diverse orchestral pieces to life? This orchestra course at Duke Kunshan University invites you to explore these questions through weekly rehearsals of classical and contemporary repertoire. Designed as a hands-on ensemble experience, the course focuses on building technical proficiency, fostering teamwork, and deepening your understanding of orchestral norms. Previous experience in learning and performing a musical instrument is recommended. Consent of the instructor is required.

How can I prepare for the class sessions to be successful?

You are expected to study your sheet music and any conductor-provided notes before rehearsals and annotate challenging sections. You can watch/listen to shared recordings from Prof. Niu to internalize phrasing, style, and ensemble balance. You are expected to prioritize technical mastery of your part, focusing on difficult passages, intonation, and rhythm. You will also benefit from coordinating and practicing with other members of your section.

Sheet Music: Provided digitally at the start of the semester via the orchestra’s WeChat group and/or the DKU Orchestra Box folder (access instructions will be shared).

Reference Recordings: Shared alongside sheet music for rehearsal preparation. Links to streaming platforms (e.g., Bilibili) or audio files will be provided.

Instrument: Members are encouraged to prepare their own instruments.

School Rentals: Limited instruments are available for temporary loan (Instructions for Instrument Rent). Contact the Prof. Niu for sign-up procedures.

Accessories: Reeds, valve oil, rosin, spare strings, etc., depending on your instrument (students are responsible for purchasing these, but can be reimbursed through orchestra budget).

Academic Disruptive Behavior and Community Standard:

Please avoid all forms of disruptive behavior, including but not limited to: verbal or physical threats, repeated obscenities, unreasonable interference with class discussion, making/receiving personal phone calls, text messages or pages during class, excessive tardiness, leaving and entering class frequently without notice of illness or other extenuating circumstances, and persisting in disruptive personal conversations with other class members.  Please turn off phones, pagers, etc. during class unless instructed otherwise.  Laptop computers may be used for class activities allowed by the instructor during synchronous sessions. If you choose not to adhere to these standards, I will take action in consultation with university administration (e.g., Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Student Conduct, Academic Advising).
