Appliances

• Alarm clock (phones are collected each night and cannot be used as alarm clocks)
• Box fan for your window
• Desk lamp (lamps must use CFL or LED bulbs; not halogen or incandescent)

Bedding & Bath Supplies

• Two towels
• Soap, shampoo, razors, deodorant, and other personal hygiene items
• Shower caddy or toiletry kit
• Shower shoes
• Hair dryer
• Pillow and pillow case
• Two sets sheets (Twin XL size)
• Comforter, quilt, blanket, or bedspread

Clothing

• Please see the suggested clothing packing list on our Dress Code page. 

Laundry & Cleaning Supplies

Note: All students have access to free laundry facilities. The school does not provide a pick-up/drop-off laundry service. All students will do their own laundry in dorm laundry facilities.

• Laundry bag or basket and HE laundry detergent
• Wrinkle releaser spray
• Disinfectant wipes for cleaning your bureau, desk, etc.
• A note about hangers: There are plenty of hangers on campus. Please consider not bringing them. If you find you need more, Walmart is a short trip away. 

School Supplies

All of these items can be purchased at the School Store after you know what each teacher requires for his or her course, but a few starter materials may be helpful.

• Water bottle (labeled with student’s name)
• Laptop (see our Student Technology Requirements for more information)
• Backpack 
• 3 to 5 notebooks and/or 3-ring binders
• Paper, pens, pencils, highlighters
• Post-it notes
• Scissors, tape, stapler, 3-hole punch
• All new students will receive an academic planner from the school at the beginning of the school year.

Miscellaneous/Optional

• Under-the-bed storage
• Plastic containers for all food kept on dorm (required if you plan to keep food in your room)
• Padlock for your top bureau drawer (for storing any valuables)
• Posters and family pictures (posters must be appropriate, as described in the Student Handbook)
• Bulletin board and/or dry erase board
• 3M hanging hooks and/or velcro strips (Decor added to walls must be removable without causing damage to the walls.)
• Mug, bowl, plate, spoon, fork
• Umbrella
• Extension cord
• Flashlight and battery
• Bicycle, rollerblades, or skateboard, plus lock
• Helmet (must be worn while biking, rollerblading, or skateboarding)

Do NOT bring:

• Bedroom furniture to use in place of the standard SAS furniture
• TVs, DVD players, or video game consoles (VI Form students in good academic standing may ask the co-dean of residential life for permission to have a video game console in-room; TVs/monitors must not exceed 32 inches)
• Halogen or incandescent lamps (for both safety and environmental reasons); CFLs or LEDs are permitted
• Candles, combustibles, matches, lighters, knives, or weapons of any kind
• Coffee makers, hot pots, or any cooking item with a heating element
• Posters or decoration with inappropriate and/or salacious messages, or alcohol or drug-related content
• Air conditioners
• Wireless hubs
• Refrigerators—VI Formers (seniors) may have refrigerators.  If a student below the VI Form needs a refrigerator in their room for medical reasons, they must obtain permission from the co-dean of residential life. All dorms have a shared refrigerator for student use.

Please click here to review our dress code for the 2024-25 school year. Our dress code is gender neutral. Any student can wear any of the items permitted in the dress code. Below are suggested quantities you may want to follow as you prepare to come to St. Andrew’s. Current students helped us to compile these quantities using their own experiences, but these are suggested quantities only—depending on your personal style and inclination to do laundry, your final packing list may look different. 

Dress Code Wear 

• 3-5 button-down shirts
• 3-5 polo shirts
• 4-6 blouses
• 5-7 pairs of pants or khakis (not denim/jeans of any color)
• 3-5 pairs of shorts (not denim or athletic shorts; no shorter than fingertips)
• 3-5 dresses (no shorter than fingertips)
• 3-5 skirts (no shorter than fingertips)
• 1-2 blazers
• 3-4 cardigans

Casual & Athletic Wear

• 7-10 t-shirts (short and long sleeve) or tank tops for sports and sleeping
• 2-3 sweatshirts
• 2-3 pairs of jeans
• 3-5 pairs of athletic shorts (no shorter than fingertips)
• 3-5 pairs of leggings, sweatpants, track pants, yoga pants, etc.

You will also need:

• Underwear
• Bras (sports and regular)
• At least one pair of indoor dress shoes
• At least one pair of waterproof shoes or boots
• Sneakers for playing sports and daily wear
• Socks (casual & athletic)
• Belts
• Rain jacket
• A warm or winter jacket
• 2-3 sweaters
• Hat and gloves

You may also want:

• Sandals that aren’t rubber flip-flops or slides for Haycock wear
• Shower shoes if you like to wear these
• Bathing suit

For this year’s summer reading, all students are asked to choose and read at least two summer reading books from this list. During the first week of school, students and faculty will gather in groups for “book talks”—informal conversations led by faculty about the books they’ve recommended.

In addition, all students must dedicate at least ten hours over the course of the summer to math work, as described here. Other, non-required summer enrichment opportunities can be explored in the sidebar on this page.

Class of 2028 students are also asked and submit their version of the “I Am From” poem by Beverly Tatum, author, professor, college president, and designer of the “I Am From Poem Exercise.” Our co-deans of residential life Stacey Duprey and Will Rehrig have provided the following information to aid in completing this assignment:

If you are traveling to campus via plane or train, please email your student’s return-to-school travel itinerary no later than Monday, August 12, to Transportation Coordinator Karin Wright at kwright@standrews-de.org. Need transportation to campus on your arrival day? Pick-up service at the Philadelphia Airport or Wilmington Train Station must be scheduled at least a week in advance of your child’s arrival. On busier arrival days, shuttles will pick up students at the Philadelphia Airport at 9:00 AM, noon, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM (all ET), and shuttles will pick up students at the Wilmington Train Station at 9:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 3:30 PM, and 6:30 PM (all ET).
