Politico is launching a strategic partnership with a Y Combinator-backed artificial intelligence startup to develop a bespoke AI tool that will quickly summarize its journalism.

In an announcement first shared with Semafor, Politico and Capitol AI said they’ve formed a partnership to develop a tool for subscribers to Politico Pro, the outlet’s premium subscription platform that covers policy, state and federal legislation, and congressional committee hearings in granular detail. The new AI tool, which will roll out later this year, will aim to help users quickly pull together information from Politico and Politico Pro content to create comprehensive reports on topics instantly.

“Capitol AI is coming out of the YC Summer 24 batch with stellar traction, and its partnership with Politico demonstrates the value that publishers can deliver when they embrace the future of content instead of burying their heads in the sand,” Garry Tan, CEO of Y Combinator, said in a statement first shared with Semafor.

Both companies emphasized that the tool relies entirely on Politico reporting, and is meant to serve as an additive product for Pro users. During a demonstration for Semafor of a version of the product that will eventually be built within Politico Pro, Capitol AI CEO Shaun Modi showed how the tool highlights citations from Politico’s journalism.

“This is not about automating journalism, this is about unlocking the end user — the lobbyist, the government affairs person at Uber, at SpaceX, at Airbnb to better understand what’s happening in Washington, what regulations are coming, and make business decisions quickly,” Modi said. “Instead of having to parse through huge volumes of bill text, you can put in a prompt and our generative model looks through that rich information from Politico and gives you a report back.”

The move is the latest partnership between a news publisher and an AI company, but it’s unusual in one key way: The idea is to create a product specifically for Politico and increase its relevance for current Politico Pro subscribers, rather than license Politico’s content to assist or train an external AI model. The tool will be hosted inside the Politico Pro dashboard.

After initial hesitation about AI, Politico’s parent company, Axel Springer, has enthusiastically embraced large language model technology. In 2023, the company announced a deal with OpenAI that would generate “tens of millions” in revenue by letting OpenAI use Politico and Business Insider content to train models and offer answers to user prompts via ChatGPT.

In a call last week, Rachel Loeffler, Politico’s executive vice president and general manager, said that the Politico Pro partnership is separate, but that Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner has encouraged its subsidiaries to explore how to develop and use AI within their media organizations. Earlier this year, Politico rolled out AI-generated bill summaries for Pro subscribers.

“We really see AI as the next phase of digital transformation, so we have a commitment to figuring out how to harness the power of AI in conjunction with our goals and values,” Loeffler said.

The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out “dozens” of strikes targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon on Sunday as it shuttled more reservists and tanks to the two countries’ shared border, as a ground invasion appeared imminent.

US officials speaking to ABC News said that small-scale Israeli “border movements” into Lebanon may have already begun.

The escalation comes a day after the Iran-backed group and dominant political party in Lebanon confirmed that a Friday airstrike in Beirut killed its leader Hassan Nasrallah. Several other senior Hezbollah figures were also killed in the strike, the IDF said. After the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu abruptly left the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he had vowed to continue Israel’s fight against Hezbollah.

The News

Austria’s far-right Freedom Party appears to have won its first national election with 29.1% of the vote, the country’s state broadcaster reported Sunday. The apparent victory marks another major electoral victory for Europe’s far-right movement.

The Freedom Party’s win would still require it to form a coalition government with other parties, a scenario that is more likely to come to pass given that the country’s center-right party, which was in second place, exit polls showed, has said it would be willing to work with the far right.

China stock rally could continue through year, but concerns over stimulus remain

Beijing released a series of measures last week aimed to stimulate the country’s flagging economy, but the long-term effects are still unclear.

The News

After key Chinese stock indexes saw some of their biggest weekly gains in years last week, investors are increasingly confident that the country’s flagging economy may be heading toward a lasting recovery.

FOMO is running high” one analyst told Bloomberg. “Based on historical valuation, we think Chinese stocks have another 20% runway to go.” Meanwhile, a Goldman Sachs analyst predicted the rally may continue through the end of the year. When asked what investors might buy, a hedge fund manager told CNBC: “Everything. Every. Thing.”

Markets have been buoyed by Beijing’s release of a multi-point stimulus package, which included billions in spending and easing measures, although much of the package’s scope remains unclear. From what has been announced so far, the package will likely fall short of the country’s 2008 stimulus, which saw 4 trillion yuan injected into the economy, and some suspect the new measures may be insufficient to fuel a broader Chinese economic rebound.

New Japanese PM rattles markets ahead of inauguration

Shigeru Ishiba has supported raising taxes on companies and investment income, but his fiscal policy once he enters office Oct. 1 remains unclear.

The News

Ahead of Japan’s new prime minister being sworn in on Oct. 1, analysts predicted a “very ugly” Monday for the country’s stock market. A former defense minister, Shigeru Ishiba is known for his criticism of the country’s central bank’s long-standing policy of aggressive easing and stimulus, and for his support for higher taxes on companies and investment income.

After he won Japan’s ruling party’s leadership contest last week, Ishiba said that “monetary policy must remain accommodative” to economic conditions, and that he would leave interest rate decisions largely up to the Bank of Japan. However, analysts predicted that “near-term price volatility is likely to persist,” Financial Times noted, until there is more clarity on Ishiba’s fiscal stance.

Melting glaciers force Italy and Switzerland to redraw border

The two countries had historically relied on the Alpine glaciers near the Zermatt ski resort as a frontier.

The News

Italy and Switzerland have redrawn their shared border in the Alps, a decision compelled by climate change. Historically, the two European countries have used glaciers in the shadow of the Matterhorn mountain peak as their frontiers, but the glaciers are rapidly shrinking due to climate change.

The changes, proposed in 2023, were ratified by Switzerland Friday, Bloomberg reported, with Italy expected to follow suit.

The decision affects the border around the Zermatt ski resort, a popular tourist destination that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Europe has seen rapid warming and record temperatures each year this decade, and Alpine glaciers have lost some 10% of their volume in the last two years, leading some experts to predict more changes to borders in the region may be on the horizon.

Election lawsuits mount weeks ahead of US presidential vote

Many of the challenges, if they progress in the courts, could offer grounds to contest the result of the Nov. 5 ballot.

The News

A rising number of state-level legal challenges to election rules has legal experts increasingly concerned that the results of the Nov. 5 presidential election will be disputed, multiple outlets have reported.

More than 90 lawsuits that challenge voting rules and other practices have been filed this year by Republican-aligned groups, The New York Times reported, citing data from the Democratically aligned Democracy Docket group that tracks election cases. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee has said it alone is involved in 120 legal challenges across 26 states, Reuters noted. Democrats have also mounted their own legal challenges in Georgia and elsewhere.

Legal experts have said that, while many of the lawsuits causing concern are unlikely to have much impact on the election itself, they indicate a broader effort to lay the groundwork for challenges to the results of the Nov. 5 vote, they said.
