Yeah. Hello to Jesse's grandfather. I'm sorry that we're not able to meet in person, but perhaps one way we might be lucky enough to do so. Unfortunately, although more and more British people are learning to speak Chinese. I am not one of them. At my school, we learned French and Latin and so I thought I'd begin by introducing myself and telling you a little bit bit about me.

My name is Mark Webster. I'm 59 years old. I was born in Kuwait and have been lucky enough to travel a lot in my life there. One place I've hardly seen as China. I've spent a lot of time in Hong Kong. And I did take a short trip to you. Hi, Shenzhen and Gwangju. Sorry if my pronunciation isn't very good before my stroke.

I have been a head teacher for 15 years and or as we call them in the UK head teacher. I've been a school principal. I was very lucky with my job because I very much enjoyed it. Well, because I enjoyed it so much, I probably put so much effort into it that it possibly was one of the reasons why I've got a stroke today because I work so hard.

Thursday, the 7th of December 2023, was a normal day at work like any other, but when I left it on my bicycle, the end of the school day, I had no idea how much life would never be the same again. I'm sure you have your own version of this situation, and though I remember that evening very well, I had a lot to do and rushed around to get when I got home to get some food out for my family.

I ran home in order to get ready for going out and also to get my clothes ready for the next day. I usually go to work very early and knew I would forget. The next day was a special day at school because it was the last day before the holidays, and on that day we can always wear whatever clothes we like.

So I wanted to get my clothes ready for the morning. I got home and then having got ready, I went to a bar near to my house because I was meeting up with some friends of mine who I played football soccer with on Monday night. One of them is an interesting person who is now very famous in this country.

He's called Keir Starmer and he was just made the prime minister of the United Kingdom about a week ago. And so after going to the bar, we walked to an Italian restaurant where I had my last meal before my stroke, which I remember very well, for reasons I will explain in a bit. I had pasta with seafood. After the meal I walked, I went to bed.

I thought I had slept a long night's sleep. And when I got up to visit the bathroom, I was a bit surprised when my wife asked me where I was going and what I was doing. Well, I didn't realize was that I had got up at 330 in the morning. I was. I now realize that I was very lucky that I woke her up.

As you know, the earlier the stroke is detected, the earlier the doctors can start trying to deal with it. And that makes a big difference. I didn't think there was anything wrong with me. I walked to the bathroom and walked back. And what my wife noticed was that I was having difficulty doing up the zip on my jacket.

And so she got up and I asked her what was wrong. I said, Nothing's wrong, but she could see that there was something wrong. So she phoned up two friends of ours, her doctors, and they said to her, You need to get an ambulance as quickly as you can. So we called for an ambulance. But in England, ambulances can be very, very slow.

Says she decided the best idea was to drive me to a hospital. So we got to the hospital not very far away. We didn't wait very long. And then I had a brain scan and the doctor came to see me. This meant I had had a stroke and and after a few hours, I was taken to a hospital in central London, which is a special hospital where they deal with people who've had strokes. And they did a long operation on me, which I didn't realize at the time. I was in a lot of danger and my wife was worried I might not survive the operation.

But thankfully I did. And I stayed in that hospital for a few days before they got me a place in another hospital a little bit nearer to where I live, which meant that my friends and my family could come and see me, which, as you know, is very important because it's very easy to feel very sad and very hopeless.

So having a lot of visits from friends and my family every day was really important. I was in hospital for that hospital for a few weeks, including Christmas and my birthday and on my birthday Christmas, which was a bit sad. But at the end of that month they found me a place in a rehabilitation specialist where so I remember the night before I was moving to the specialist.

I thought, I really need to make the very best use of every single day. So I've always really liked sport and I remember one of the things I knew that a lot of the people who do very well in sport, they train very, very hard. So I was taken by ambulance to to this new place, this rehabilitation place, which I remember very clearly, because as I was pushed out from the hospital into the back of the ambulance, I felt some rain on my face and I felt it was it was a very special moment because it was the first time I'd been outside and experienced something very ordinary.

In Britain, it rains a lot, so to feel rain on your face is quite a common thing that makes people unhappy when they fall. But I was so happy. I started to feel tears in my eyes because it felt like I was getting closer to my own life to see the rain on my face. They took me to this new hospital and the first thing that was really nice was I had my own room.

And the only problem with this room was it was very, very hot. So hot that. Are you right? Yeah. Sorry about that, Jess. It's okay. And the hospital was very, very hot and so. Well, there was a lovely to have my room. I slept very badly every night because it was so hot. And being a rehabilitation place, they spend every minute of every day trying to work hard on rehabilitation.

So you get up in the morning and 8:00 you go to this room where some of the patients and you you make your own breakfast, which is like a step towards being independent and so after that, I would go and have a shower and they would teach me how to have a shower by myself and also had to put on my clothes, which was okay.

But the thing I found showering easy, the thing I found hard was putting on my socks, which I found really, really difficult for a long time.

And that made it easier. And actually, as you probably found yourself, a lot of dealing with the situation we're in is about trying to find solutions to things that used to be easy, but I now have to find new ways of doing them. So after the after kind of breakfast and getting dressed, I would have 2 hours in the gymnasium, the physiotherapy room where I would always start with the same thing.

I would cycle what was about seven kilometers, which is roughly how far I used to cycle every day to get to school. And same again coming home. Usually someone holding you, baby, pushing you in a wheelchair or when I first started, I had a stick with kind of four legs and then at my hospital they would work very hard every day. So I'd have 2 hours of this. And then after a while, I went from a stick with four legs to stick with one leg.
00:09:19:03 - 00:09:44:04

And I just that made a big difference because stick with one leg is not so strong. So you have to put a lot more effort into your legs. And then after three and a half months, I was able to leave the hospital and I came home and actually coming home was very good, obviously, because it was lovely to be with my friends and family, to see my family every day and also to be in a familiar place.

But the only problem with it is, is that it also reminds you of all the things you used to be able to do easily and now you can't. So we have a big garden. But I can't go into the garden. So. So what I have done is a friend of mine I made house was a he threw away his stick after two days and I thought, I'm going to try that too. And actually so now I walk around indoors with a stick, which is very help because it means I can make myself a cup of coffee and carrier.

And when I make myself lunch, I can carry the plate. And so I don't use a stick inside anymore. But I used to stick outside. I still do a lot of training every day. I do physiotherapy every single day of the week, every Monday to Friday at the weekend. I practice and I always try to go for at least one good walk every day.

I don't know about you, but the thing I found harder than actually walking and things like that has been keeping positive, keeping optimistic. So I'm sure they have made a big difference to you.

Good luck, my friend. I hope you're keeping strong and you know that things are going well for you. One very useful thing that the hospital taught me to do is to write a diary of what things I was able to do, and then I could look back and remind myself that even when you think you're not really making any progress, when you think of the first days, you're after your stroke.

And also like, although I still find that moving, my hand is very hard and moving. This arm is very difficult. I think I'm sure actually in a year's time I will be able to move it much better and I would be able to look back and say a year ago I could, you know, do too many things and then hopefully a bit by bit I'll get better.

Okay. We've both got to remember that we will get better and better and stronger and stronger. It's just not so. It is not so. I always say to people it's a bit like watching a plant grow and you don't see much change it from day to day. But then suddenly you look at the plant and it's grown. And I think our recovery will be the same thing.

Hopefully one day I'll be strong enough to get on the plane and come and see you in China one day, or at the very least have able to stand up and give you a proper message. Hello. Thank you very much for your message, which I enjoyed. And I think it's true. We got to encourage each other. And you're right. We will. We will get better. It's just some. Some things are going to take time. So one of the things that I learned in hospital is how important it is to be patient, which was not something I was very good at before.

I've been to Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Gwangju. I'm sorry if those are all pronounced wrong. I'm afraid of lots of English people in there learning Chinese, Mandarin Chinese. I'm afraid I have not learned any of it at school with the French, and so I'm afraid I am sorry about my pronunciation. But I would love to see China. I think it's a really fascinating country and maybe I can teach you a little bit Mandarin.

Yeah. Oh, my God. You're so far. I think if you start to learn Mandarin, then maybe you can get a really quick progress in three. I doubt it. I'll try it. Yeah. That's so cute. So carry on with what I was saying. Yeah. Okay. So I would love to see more of China. I think it's a fascinating country.

Some years ago I went to a fantastic exhibition at the British Museum and which so I'm trying to find that book here. It is about the first Emperor of China. It was really amazing. And ever since then, I've always wanted to go there. Oh, sorry. Um, so I am. Yeah. Before my stroke, I was a school principal, which in the UK we call headmaster.

And I've done that job for 15 years. I loved it, which is good. But one bad thing was that I probably loved it so much that I did so much work for that probably didn't help stop me getting the stroke because I used to get up very early in the morning and I was in work by about 6:00 every morning and I would work a little bit at the weekend.

And after I got home and got ready for the next day, I went to a bar with some friends because on Monday night I used to play football and one of the people I play with is now quite famous in the United Kingdom. His name is Keir Starmer and he was just made the Prime Minister here about a week ago.

Everyone in each bin. So first, could you describe how your vision was affected by the stroke? Okay. So I was lucky in one way, and I didn't lose any of my vision. So I can still read, I can still see everything. However, what happened is I have something called visual neglect, which basically means that. Sorry. And what this means is that I have a when I'm when, when, if like before my stroke, if I was sitting here and something was happening over here, I would understand it straight away.
00:22:15:14 - 00:22:42:06

But what happens now is it's a bit slow between something happening and me realizing it's happened. So I have to be very careful crossing a road. And and quite a good example of how this this works is a few weeks ago I went to the cinema with Carol and Carol is my friend and also works with Jesse. And she said to me, Are you going to be able to see the screen?
00:22:42:06 - 00:22:59:17

Okay. I said, I'll be fine. But I said, If anything important happens over here, you might have to give me a little nudge. And then about 5 minutes before the end of the film, I feel this nudge and she goes. Did you see that? And what it was, was one of the main characters in the film. Everyone thought she died.
00:22:59:19 - 00:23:29:12

And then she she suddenly appeared at this window, but I didn't notice it. So that's why vision neglected. So that means that it doesn't stop me doing things, but I can't drive. And both. So what else I do is I wear an eye patch to basically try to get my left eye exercising as much as possible. So it's kind of like in the same way that now that I have, I have problems with my left arm.
00:23:29:14 - 00:23:54:22

I do lots of exercises with my left arm, so I wear this patch to try to get my left eye doing as much as possible. But also the other thing is that say, when I'm crossing the road, I move my whole head so that I can see with my right side. So just to say I can't see everything I just don't realize it's happening as quickly.
00:23:54:24 - 00:24:30:17

So this something like playing football, if someone passes the ball from over here before I used to see it and then I would be ready for it. But now probably I wouldn't notice until it hits me. It's just like the lens, like the lenses here and capture the you can see things. I said, No, not exactly. It's more like, you know, you know, maybe you don't remember, Jesse, but in years gone by when he used to have when he used to speak to someone on the phone a long way away, there was a slight delay between, like the sound.
00:24:30:19 - 00:24:53:16
Unknown
Yeah. So it's kind of like it's just slightly slower. I got it. So it's a stagflation problem. Just you suddenly realize it after you realize you had a stroke or you like. Gradually they tested me in hospital and they said, you know, so this is it. For example, if let's say they hold up fingers here, I'd be able to see straight away.
00:24:53:16 - 00:25:21:07
Unknown
But if they hold them here, I might take longer to say there's four or three or something like that. And how like it there's a lot of changes up to the stroke and the influence of life a lot. I mean as you mentioned in the letter to. Yeah. And that how you feel about it like you said. So I feel very sad about some things.
00:25:21:09 - 00:25:44:14

So actually the thing that's very hard is a lot of things are frustrating because you're so used to be able to do them easily. So save, for example, something simple like using a knife and fork. I have to ask for help to cut things. So last night we had chicken and my wife had to cut the weight from the bones so that that sort of thing I find hard.
00:25:44:16 - 00:26:15:06

And but that was practice and also trying out different ways. I've been able to do most of the things that I used to do. Not everything, but most of the things will be engines. I get a little bit anxious, but mainly about just thinking about, you know, I hope nothing else happens, you know? So having had one stroke, I sometimes, you know, when I had my stroke, it was here is the problem.
00:26:15:08 - 00:26:34:15
Unknown
So if I have pain here, I worry you know, is this another stroke? But I don't worry all the time. Just, you know, the other thing that's hard is say if I lose something, I worry about it much more than I used to. Because before, if I lost something. Okay, I'll find it. If I have to throw it away, it must be here somewhere.

But now, because I that see things so well, I kind of think, Oh, gosh, it's gone. You know, here, I can't do. And, uh. But will you feel you have a burden to the family? I try not to be, but so sometimes, yeah. I don't like asking for things all the time. They never complain. They always want to help me.
00:26:58:04 - 00:27:19:11

But, you know, there are things that I have to get the help with. And I always feel kind of worried, especially my sons, you know, because I think they're just boys. They need to enjoy their lives. So like having to say to them, you know, can you help me? And with this all the time is hard. So it's quite good because it encourages me to try to do more things for myself.

So the kind of thing, for example, is say like yesterday I bought some lemonade and getting the top off, it was very tight and it's quite hard, you know, to hold it with one hand because this hand is not very strong. So to hold off with the lid, I always have to get that help. Yeah. Because my I think sometimes my grandpa feels sad or depressed.
00:27:42:12 - 00:28:08:05

Yeah. Because he feels he's a burden. Yeah. Spending money. He's spending your time. He's like, taking our time and taking the money. They should, like, pay for me to come here. Yeah. And so they will see how he will feel in that way. Yeah, I feel similarly, but I've been lucky because my family have always sort of said, No, no, no, it's no problem at all.
00:28:08:07 - 00:28:28:14

So I don't think about it so much. But I do sometimes worry that, you know, that like it's very hard for my family because also when anyone visits, they always feel sorry for me, but they don't think about the fact that for my family, this is a lot of sacrifices as well. So my wife especially, it's very hard for her.

Yeah. Could you please repeat like I like I don't feel much about being depressed, about being the burden of my family. Yeah, sure. So most of the time I try not to be a burden. So I don't I don't worry about it too much. But I do sometimes, especially when I have to ask my sons to do things.
00:28:52:08 - 00:29:18:13

The other things I worry about is so when people come round to see me ups, they look at me, they feel sorry for me, but they forget about my family.

So not just your arms and legs, but also things like can you read a map? Can you prepare a plan, something Also, can you keep positive? Because it's quite easy to feel very sad and that and to try to help you understand how to how to deal with these things. So I'm doing that on Wednesday and then the week after, I'm going to the Royal Academy, where they have a friend of mine is a member there and they have something thing called a summer exhibition.

So the Royal Academy is a big museum in central London. And every summer they anyone who wants to paint or make sculptures can send in that their what they've done. And the academy chooses everything that they like and they put it all up and anyone can buy it. So it's kind of like a big sale, but it's a big thing that happens every year.

So a friend of mine is going to take me there and then we're going to go for lunch at a nice hotel called the Woolsey, which is when Prince William and his wife, Princess and Princess Kate, who is I forgot what her title is and she's a princess. But they when they got married, that's where she went for her meal.
00:36:37:12 - 00:37:03:10

So it's a very nice hotel. So we're doing that in like two weeks time. And then also after that, Kim and I and our sons, we're going to go for maybe two nights away. And then later on in the summer, in August, we'll go away for a few days to Derbyshire. What we're going to do is we've got a it's quite different, actually.
00:37:03:10 - 00:37:32:12

It's it's a hotel, but the rooms are in the trees. So like, I don't have to climb a tree to get there, thankfully. Otherwise I could go, obviously. So we'll do that for a few days. The other big thing that day is our oldest son will get his exam results, which are quite important because next year the idea is he goes to university, I should say next year he applies this year, but he'll start maybe this October or something.
00:37:32:14 - 00:37:52:08

And he's only he's only got one exam and needs to get results for which is maths. He's very good at math, say he should do very well, but we'll come back for that. So that's the plan for this month and next month and all the time I'll probably carry on with my physiotherapy. Thank you.

Yeah. To talk about that. Yeah. Okay. Like going back to work and things, Jimmy. Yeah, you can say, like, so my expectation for future is. Yeah. Yeah. Hello? Okay, so. Well, what? I think my future is kind of divided into short and longer term. So hope physically is that when what I want to be able to do is I want to be able to use this hand more to be able to say, do up buttons and things like that.
00:38:24:22 - 00:38:53:15

Um, and also to do more cooking. And I'm going to practice hard to try to get it better. The other thing is that what I also will be doing, which I didn't mention, is before my stroke I was doing a, I was back at university doing a qualification. It's called a postgraduate certificate in Philosophy, which is a course for learning about different parts of philosophy I was doing at Cambridge University.
00:38:53:15 - 00:39:19:12

So it's quite difficult. And actually if I don't go back to work this this year, then I'll focus on the course for a year. But what I also do is I'll have some tests later in this year to see if I can go back to work. If I don't go back to work, I'll be sad, but I'll be okay because I've got lots of things that I want to do, like the course.
00:39:19:14 - 00:39:44:13

So I'll do that next year. And so what I'm hoping is that I'll continue to practice on my arm, in particular my hand. And you know, bit by bit I'll get better. I don't know if my eye will get better. I don't think I'll be able to drive. If I can't, it will be in many, many years. The only way I'll be able to drive is if I can get my eye working this.

I'm working well enough that actually it doesn't matter that I can't see things so quickly on the left hand side. So well, I hope to do is I would like to go back to work if possible, but I don't mind not going to work. I'm very lucky because, you know, I my mother was very, very good with her money, so she's left me in a position that actually I don't have to go to work.
00:40:10:10 - 00:40:28:19

But also at work we have an insurance policy, which means that if I can't go back to work, I still get money coming in, so I won't need to go to work. So those are my plans for the future. There's things I'd love to do. I sit on my list of things I want to do again. Well, I hope to be able to do.

I very much hope that I'll be able to play football one day again. I'd also like to and before that, and I watched one of the documentaries from Career Studios before, who a guy who had a stroke and he went running and I thought, if he can run, then maybe I can run. So that would be something I'd like to do in the next 12 months, even if I just run to the end of my garden and back, that'll be something.
