The great Cathedral in Rome, the harbor of Lisbon, the music of the lute, the taste of almonds, the hymn “Lord, Our Soul’s Mirror”-such memories, before he was aware of it, brought the sorrow of homesickness into the heart of this redhaired bonze. To drive away this sorrow, he softly chanted the name of Deus. But this sorrow did not disappear; rather, it spread an even more oppressive mood throughout his breast.

Organtino sighed. At that moment his eyes accidentally caught sight of pale white cherry blossoms which had fallen here and there on the moss under the trees. Cherry blossoms! Amazed, Organtino stared at an opening in a gloomy clump of trees. There, among four or five dwarf palms, a single weeping cherry, branches hanging low, fumed blos-soms like in a dream.

But the next moment, when he discovered that it was no apparition, but just a cherry tree, he gave a forced smile of embarrassment and quietly returned his weak steps to the path by which he had come.

Thirty minutes later he was offering up prayers to Deus in the chancel of the Temple of the Southern Barbarians. Only a single lamp was suspended from the vaulted ceiling. By the light from that lamp, St. Michael struggled with demons from Hell for the corpse of Moses on the frescoed walls surrounding the chancel. But, tonight, perhaps because of the dim light, not only the valiant Archangel, but even the howling demons seemed mysteriously more graceful than usual. Or perhaps that was because the fresh roses and broom placed before the altar were giving off their fragrances. Behind the altar, his head firmly bent, Organtino gave this fervent prayer:

But in any case, that power pervades this whole land, exactly like an underground spring. If You cannot first defeat this power,–Oh, Hail Deus our Saviour, Merciful and Com-passionate!-the Japanese, who are prone to heresy, will probably never in all eternity venerate Your Majesty in Paradise. To that end I have suffered anguish upon anguish for these many days. Please grant to Your servant Organtino courage and patience . . .”

Suddenly, just then, Organtino thought that he had heard

The words of the prayer vanished from his lips he knew not how. Then, suddenly, a noisy crowing could be heard near the altar. Organtino looked about him suspiciously. As he did so, was there not, right behind him, a single rooster, white tail drooping, puffing out its chest on top of the altar as it once more gave its war cry, as if it were dawn?

He saw around them several hundred roosters who endlessly crowed joyfully as they rubbed their tail feathers and combs against each other. Beyond them-Organtino finally could not but doubt his own eyes. Beyond them, a slab of rock, like the door to a cave, was rising ponderously in the night mist.

The woman atop the tun continued her ceaseless dance. The vines which bound her hair fluttered in the air. The jewels which hung from her neck resounded again and again like hail. Of course it was not Hitomaro himself who did this; rather, it was our powers, the Gods of this land, who safeguarded his heart. And further, the philosophers of China introduced calligraphy as well to this land. Kukai, Dofu, Sari, Kozei-l always went secretly to wherever they were. Their models were all calligraphy by Chinese, but, gradually, a new beauty was born from the tips of their brushes. Without their realizing it, their characters were neither Wang Hsi-chih’s nor Ch’u Sui-liang’s; they had begun to exist as Japanese characters. But our victory was not just with characters alone. Like the sea breeze, our breath tempered even the Way of the Old Confucians. Just ask the natives of this land. They all believe that since the works of Mencius readily provoke our wrath, a ship bearing them would surely capsize. The God of the Winds has not yet done that sort of mischief even once. But we who live in this land have a power which can be felt, however faintly, even in such beliefs. Don’t you think so?"

Was that the Sun Goddess’ victory? Or was it the victory of the Great Sun Buddha? Granting, for the sake of argument, that at present the Sun Goddess is not known to the inhabitants of this land and that those who know of the Great Sun Buddha are numerous; even so, is it not the Sun Goddess’ visage rather than that of the Indian Buddha’s that appears to them on the form of the Great Sun Buddha that they see in their dreams? I walked together with Shinran and Nichiren even in the shade of the flowers of the sal tree. The Buddha they worshipped with adoration was not some blackamoor made by Enko. He was the kin of those like Prince Shotoku, filled with quiet dignity.-But let me end my lengthy talk on such things, as I promised. In essence, what I want to say is that no one who comes to this land, as Deus has, is a victor.”
